Cable management is important and good airflow.
I completely agree with those hints, i would just like to add that you should google for complete guides for each of those steps, since they are really important on building a rig that you will overclock.
don't even bother with a layer, just put a drop in the center of the cpu and mount the heatsink. the mating pressure will do the required work.

Actually benchmarks usually show anything past 3MB either affecting game performance very little or not at all.

my AMD Phenom II X6 1100 BE with 3MB L2 and 6 MB L3
Depends on the clock rate and the specific application. Dolphin has about 12-15% higher performance per clock on core 2 quad cpus. I would expect the core 2 quad to run about 2-3% faster at stock clock rates, so they should be nearly identical.

Have you built it yet? If that's the case how did it turn out?
The specs are perfectly fine (saw you upgraded the processor, good choice)
As you said Dolphin isn't the only thing you will run so it's enough.
I haven't finished building it yet (I'm too poor), and I looked on newegg and thet 840 was only $10 more so I figured it was worth it
Ah OK, so is this going to be your first build or have you built other rigs?
If it's your first, then all I have to say is that it's a cake walk literally.
Potentially there is things that could go wrong but spend an extra hour more then regret it later.
And as always don't over use the thermal paste, just a smooth even layer.

First build ever!

Ya! and I figured it would be easy
Also I got a dirt cheep case and maxed it out with fans (80cm, 120cm, and 140cm)
You've already built it? That's too bad. If you have gone with Intel, then you'd see much higher fps, especially when it's overclocked.
yeah the intel cpu would give you better performance with games.

I haven't built it yet (I'm buying the parts as I get the money[which isn't very often], but I have already bought the mobo)

It will be fun to see how things turned out when it's done.
I think you did a good choice in terms of processor, Intel might be better and give better results but that ain't everything.
I want to ask the same question: Is my computer fast enough?
Sadly I know the answer already: It is not

.
I recently bought a new computer with intel i5 cpu (don't remember the exact model), 4 gigs of ram, etc. This should be a very fast and good machine, however dolphin works very slow.
I have a very basic graphic card (Nvidia Geforce 8400GS), and this might be the problem, however
I had a notebook (Asus F3M). See the spec. It had only an Nvidia 6100M gpu, much slower cpu. How it is possible that dolphins performance was better on that laptop?
I've only played new super mario bros on my notebook, playing with the settings I acheved 80% speed on wich was almost playable. It was beautiful and almost HD (1280x720).
Now I have to use 720x480, and 0.75x efb... someting. Witch is very pixelated, but at least it is 100% speed.
I'm very disappointed, because dolphin worked almost good on my old laptop, and I tought I will be able to play any wii games with my new computer without worrying about performance.

your computer isnt fast enough, i dont know your spec but something is telling me its not good enough anyway
