The main reason is because dolphin sometimes has to render many efb copies per frame.
Take twilight princess for example. The native internal resolution is 640 x 528 (.33 megapixels). 0.33MP x 9 (3x3 efb scale) x 4 (4xSSAA) x 9 (number of efb copies per frame in faron woods) x 30 (number of frames per second) = 3.24 billion pixels per second
Now a pc gaming running at 1920 x 1080 (2.05MP) without SSAA at 60 fps would only be 123 million pixels per second. Big difference. Thank god GC/Wii games need a lot less throughput per pixel than modern pc games or we would be screwed.
