Yes, but only if you take some distance from you laptop.
The Wiimote needs the candles to "locate" the screen. If they're too far apart from each other, the Wiimote won't see them.
Besides, it doesn't really matter where the candles are. You could even place them behind yourself. You'd just need to point your Wiimote at the candles and pretend the screen was there.
