That's what I read elsewhere too. SB will be released soon, I'm sure a demo will satisfy our curiosity.

I couldn't find any performance data of HD5450 running dolphin-emu in the forum. Is there some sort of a standardized benchmark so we can have a meaningful comparison of cpu and gpu? Maybe the devs can arrange something?

BTW, the higher end SB models don't have an IGP (edit: wrong info, all desktop SBs have IGP, except some of the Xeons) but they cost much more. I'd hate to upgrade to those! Driver quality is also questionable, especially for linux.

Whether we like it or not, IGPs are here to stay (expanding mobile market). Ivy Bridge IGPs have double EUs and will be released 18 months later.

I'd says the 5470 is enough for Dolphin honestly. Yeah, it's not incredible but if you have a good processor it'll be enough.

I don't see why we wouldn't implement AVX. Do you think we're using the same compiler we did a year ago? lol that thing is updated... you'd expect it to be updated again.

Real performance of HD5450 is about a quarter of an 9600gt if i remember correctly, which is in turn about 2-3 times slower than an GTX460 or 3-4 times slower than a gtx480. That is with DX9 and DX10 games.

Overall more than 16 times slower than a GTX480. And i am talking about real performance, not just a spec -based difference.

Until benchmarks come out for it, no we can't, that is impossible to say until we actually have someone using it with dolphin.

Well, that would be the second time I see a new Intel CPU been slower then it's predecessor. Last time I saw that happening was when the first Pentium 4 models came out. I doubt about seeing that happening again soon. You can take it as my personal opinion if you wish. Besides, if you think a Core i7/i5 would be a better option for an upgrade than a Sandy Brigde, I should warn you about the short lifetime rest of both sockets 1156 and 1366. Or maybe I shouldn't at all! Yep, that's what I'm gonna do. 'Cos you may want to grab one for you. Tongue

Anyway, I'm done with this. Keep posting. (51 posts! yay Rolleyes )

Well of course it will be faster. All I meant was that we won't know if it's worth spending the money to upgrade to until it comes out. How much faster is the real question.

For example I would consider upgrading to a 2500k from my q6600 myself if the performance improvements over lyynfield were significant. If it's only a little faster then it would not be enough of an improvement for me to blow $600 on.
If you're willing to wait until Sandy Beach processors you should wait... if only to buy an i5/i7 at discount.
Here's a review of Sandy Bridge CPU (it's an engineering sample)

http://www.inpai.com.cn/doc/hard/138458.htm (original article, in chinese)

There's a number of benchmarks in the article (cinebench r11.5, photoshop, wprime, popular games etc). Which benchmark gives the closest/meaningful performance indicator for dolphin-emu? Thanks.
quad core phenom ftw. unless you have thousands to blow on a comparable intel system.

i5- 750, 760
i7- 860, 870, 920, 930

which of these 6 CPU is good enough to run the following games at 60FPS, 720p or 1080p with many graphic options turned on?

The following games are
Resident evil 0, rebirth, 2, 3, code veronica, 4
Metroid Prime 1
Legends of Zelda: Twilight princess for wii
Super Mario Galaxy 2

I don't want to overclock and want to run these with stock CPU speed.

If none of these can run the games for 60fps, 720p and other graphics on without overclocking, then I will wait for SandyBridge CPU that comes out in January 2011. When I say 60fps, it means full speed so if the game is meant to be run in 30fps, then that's the max and it's fine. I just don't want the frame rates to be varying up and down.

Thank you in advance.

p.s. I will pick GPU later (probably gonna go with 6870)

That games at constant 60 fps without an insane overclocking? No way at this time. Wait for Sandy Bridge Tongue or maybe the next architecture(Ivy Bridge).

Ivy Bridge is gonna be at least a full year from now, possibly two.

He can get a motherboard for SB and get whatever processor and when Ivy comes out he can make the switch.
