If you can afford an Ci7, you can afford a Sandy Bridge for sure. The new AVX instructions set will be more worthy and the new year is just around the corner. Besides, half of the games you've mentioned don't even run on dolphin in without annoying bugs (music cut off in SMG2 i.e.).

There is no need for rush. Wait for the new year and get a Sandy Bridge. That's what I'm gonna do. Wink
I've recently gotten a i7 920. Specifically cause it's known for it's overclocking abilities. (especially the D0 stepping ones). I've got mine running @ 3.7ghz on a coolermaster air-cooler. That's a big increase vs the stock 2.67ghz. And I'm thrilled about the performance on Dolphin.

I really see no reason why you wouldn't OC. It's easy, it's fast, it gets shit done Wink And you really don't have to be a computer expert or anything anymore these days!
I would also recommend waiting a couple months (january/february) for sandy bridge if you can. If you need it NOW then get an i5 750 like I suggested.

I guess I will be patient. I just hope sandybridge setup is not too expensive.
Grab the one with unlocked multiplier (Core i7-2600K or Core i5-2500K) if you can. You'll be able to OC it without much pain. Again, that's what I'm gonna do Wink

Only difference between the 2500k and the 2600k is HT. And since HT is useless for dolphin (and most applications in general) the 2500k would be a better choice.
Sandy Bridge nearing i7-980x? I didn't think they were going to be such a big improvement. I've been wondering if I should delay my build until then but I'm really not sure. (I was going to get the i5 760) Undecided
Might as well wait and see. You can't know for sure how much sandy bridge will impact performance in general or in dolphin until it actually comes out and some benchmarking sites start reviewing it.

Better safe and delayed than regretting my purchase I suppose.
avx is useless if dolphin doesn't support it.
