Hi, here are my options
i5- 750, 760
i7- 860, 870, 920, 930
which of these 6 CPU is good enough to run the following games at 60FPS, 720p or 1080p with many graphic options turned on?
The following games are
Resident evil 0, rebirth, 2, 3, code veronica, 4
Metroid Prime 1
Legends of Zelda: Twilight princess for wii
Super Mario Galaxy 2
I don't want to overclock and want to run these with stock CPU speed.
If none of these can run the games for 60fps, 720p and other graphics on without overclocking, then I will wait for SandyBridge CPU that comes out in January 2011. When I say 60fps, it means full speed so if the game is meant to be run in 30fps, then that's the max and it's fine. I just don't want the frame rates to be varying up and down.
Thank you in advance.
p.s. I will pick GPU later (probably gonna go with 6870)
for me i'll go for i7 930 for performance
but in twilight princess but there still be some slow down in hyrule fields
but pretty much any other games runs well on i7 core computer

But since 870 is better CPU than 930, maybe I will have less problem, right?
The 870 isn't "better" really. It will overclock lower and will only run dual-channel memory. All the 9-series i7 will support triple channel ddr3
I wouldn't get any of those processors you mentioned, but an i7 950.
Since intel slashed the price by over 200$ a few months back, it's by far the most value for money right now.
It costs just $10-$20 above a 930 and runs 3.06ghz stock...
After you oc it to around 4ghz and have at least a radeon 5850 or gtx 460 you'll be running even mario galaxy 2 at over 50-55fps.
(Which means other games will easily run full speed if dolphin isn't bogging them down)

I am not planning to overclock. I heard that 870 has better turbo than 9-series i7 and can go up to 3.6Ghz (I am not sure if this is single or dual core turbo)
I am not sure how much is i7 950. Microcenter has i7 870 for 230 dollars.
Without oc'ing you can't get full speed in heavier games, fact. (I couldn't get 60fps on mario galaxy 2 with i7 950 even at 4.6ghz on liquid cooler)
Anyway, microcenter sells it for 289 bucks. Newegg has it for around a similar price. It's definitely worth it, used to cost over 500 when it was released.
p.s. if you can wait until january-february, Intel will be releasing socket 1155. Though it's mainstream, supposedly the new mid-range i7-2 series processors will perform almost as good or exceed the current i7 980x.
In Q3/4 there will be socket 2011 for high-end processors but that's almost a year away

I see. I heard about SandyBridge(1155) CPU that will come out on January 5th (I believe this is officially announced about a week ago). I also think i7-2500 sandy bridge is looking yammy~ but some people scared me by saying that its price will be very high. I don't know about intel CPU and motherboard price history but I heard that 1155 motherboard price will also be very high.
Initially, I also thought that OC is necessary.
If you don't mind, would you take a look at this youtube video?

As you can read from my comment on this page, I asked him how his i5-750 could run super mario galaxy 2 at full speed to figure out whether he tweaked his system. However, his description says his system is at stock speed and blamed other people's old dolphin build.
Anyways, Thank you very much for your generous answers. You are very kind.

well, that guy is running in 1280x720 for one. It's a pretty low resolution IMO, some people consider it normal though. I think 1920x1080 and above is the best res for playing
also, there's no fps counter. So it's impossible to say whether he's running the game at, say 45 or 55 fps.
It's also likely he disabled AA, scaling and other visual enhancers and is playing the game at it's bare minimum on dx9 plugin
The description just says he used 16x anisotrophic filtering
The things you want are more gpu dependent than cpu. Everything that has to do with graphics quality depends on the gpu. So i would have bought a gpu now for my system and a cpu(mobo, etc.) later when the new ones are in the market. If you go for Sandy bridge go with one with unlocked multiplier as there are indications that only those will be able to manually overclock by reports.

Read the entire OP.

He just wants cpu advice right now.
I would recommend the 750. Only difference between 700 and 800 series cpus is HT, which does not affect dolphin at all. And the difference between 800 series and 900 series cpus is a 20% increase in memory bandwidth due to triple channel which may or may not slightly improve performance with efb to ram. A 750 clocks just as as a 950 with turbo boost so it delivers by far the best bang per buck out of those options.
