First off, there is a lot of mistakes in CPU in this thread.
Quote:Pentium Ds can overclock much better than any Core2/core i3/i5/i7/PhenomII/Athlon II etc. out today.
Not true. World reccords are on new chips.

Second, If both are running a single app on a single core, a Core i7 @ 2ghz about equals a Core 2 @ 3ghz about equals a Pentium D at 6ghz. There is NO comparison. Period.
Third, yeah you'll need an upgrade to run Galaxy. It doesn't like you.

In terms of max clock rate with liquid nitrogen maybe, but for general OCing Pentium Ds still clock better. You have an extreme edition and I'll bet even you can't reach 5.6GHz on liquid, but you could with a Pentium D. Not to mention we have much better mobos and professional overclocking equipment now and days. World records mean nothing compared to general overclocking ability.

Which I said....twice....see:
Quote:I agree that he should get a newer cpu since pentium Ds are still crap even at a high clock rate but to say a pentium D can't be OCed due to high temps is absurd!
Quote:your right about a 2.4GHz Conroe/wolfdale easily outperforming a 3GHz pentium D. Pentium Ds may have been able to reach absurd clock rates but the performance per clock was aweful compared to todays cpus. I went from a 2.8GHz PD OCed to 4.6GHz to a 2.4GHz Core 2 quad OCed to 3.2GHz and the difference was huge.
I was talking about how good their clock rates and overclocking ability were, that's it. No where did I say they could outperform a modern chip at a high clock rate, in fact I said the exact opposite, so I don't see how that is a "mistake".

Not really, all current records (in pure clock rate) are made with either old pentium 4's or pentium D's/celerons.
Check the world OC rankings here.. There isn't a single core 2 duo, quad, or nehalem i7/i5/i3 processor up there (let alone amd).
http://hwbot.org/rankings/worldrecords#CPU-Z
Top record is currently 8.199ghz under a celeron 347.
All others in top 10 are celerons/p4's
I'de like to take the time to apologize to the OP for completely derailing this thread, I did not realize this would happen (although we did get an interesting discussion out of it).
