It depends on the game. Some games need it some don't. Some games are even unplayable without it.
Metroid prime for example. In order to get the thermal visor and x-ray visor working you have to use efb to ram. And without those you cannot play through the whole game. SMG and NSMB have lots of effects that don't work properly without efb to ram. EFB to ram is the proper way to emulate the efb, the only reason we even have efb to texture is because it's to slow for people on lower end hardware to use.
