Hey folks, so I've been trying for so long but 1 GB of ram remains hardware reserved, so I thought of downgrading Windows 7 64 bit to 32 bit... since I only have 1gb of ram... will I see speed improvements?
Obvious answer would be no, but maybe...
doubtfull unless the 64bit versions of the system drivers are plain HORRIBLE BEYOND FAILURE
If you only have 1GB RAM then you'd see better results downgrading to XP (Vista is worse so don't even bother with that), Win7 uses a 1GB of RAM just idling and running your background programs (hell mine even uses 1.3GB).
No, windows will dynamically use RAM depending on the resource available, so with 1GB it'll use less than the people with 2GB or more when idling.

It's not a pleasant experience though and I agree with XP 1GB is much more enjoyable.

Most satisfactional answer - I'm going to downgrade to XP when I have time. Thank you.

I tried to use win7 on a 1gb netbook and it was a nightmare.
Sure it would scale to lower RAM usage but it was very sluggish even after opening two programs (music player+browser)

After switching to 32bit XP it became much faster.
Wait, Windows 7 should run just fine on 1GB of ram, wtf are you people talking about? Windows 7 performs just as good, if not better than XP, even on older hardware. There must have been some issue with your installs, I even used Vista on an old Celeron D rig with a Geforce FX 5500 and 1GB of ram without an issue so something definitely seems wrong with your install/system.
Nope, I had one stick of my ram lent and with 1GB it was very noticeably slower/stuttery than with 2GB.

Sure it may still perform good for your standard, but XP will still perform better with 1 GB.
Benchmarks say otherwise, Windows 7 is now king. Something was definitely fubar'd with your install. Plenty of people run Windows 7 on a netbook without problems, as do those with older systems.. A 2 - 3 Ghz processor, semi-decent video card and 1+ GB of ram should be fine. Some are even running on 512 MB - 768 MB of ram just fine, any lower than that and the installer needs to be edited to install on systems with less than 512 MB ram.
Yeah... I attempted Win 7 with 256 MB RAM, and I ran, but it required 5 mins to refresh a screen..... :<
But still, a 64-bit 7 on 1 GB will be no problem, given that you might have a good processor....
