this is with, opera, audio player (aimp), avast av, comodo firewall, utorrent, and ati catalyst running in the background of a computer which has been up for days.

i'm not much of a pc gamer but in the crysis days, i ran it fine in vista x64 albeit with gpu limitation slowdown... more recent games that i tested (alpha protocol, just cause 2) also works fine with no stutter or any noticeable ram hunger.
ya, it seems windows does scale the amount of branch prediction and other things based on how much memory you have.

In general it will use 25-35% of RAM in idle (at least in windows 7 64-bit), instead of a fixed amount.
It seems so, I just want to add that I don't have any slowdown (relative with my software setup) using 2GB of ram, while on an occasion when I tried with 1 GB, it was stuttery.
