Yeah, i don't know how this turned into a debate about clock speed. It has always been a repeated thing among tech people that Intel currently has an advantage over AMD. That advantage is said to be smaller than before with the Phenom II line, but it's still supposed to be there.
If you somehow managed to overclock a Pentium D dual core processor to 4ghz, and had a similar Core i5 dual core clocked at the same frequency, the Core i5 will apparently perform FAR better. Even if you run on stock speeds with the i5, you should still get better performance than the Pentium D at its peak... If there's one thing i've learned from emulation forums, it's that architecture is extremely important to speed.
As long as i can play pretty much any game at full speed, i'd be happy to have the Thuban. The price is amazing. I was going to buy a Phenom II quad core last year for around that price and now a much better one is out for the same price. Can't beat that. Even IF the i7 has a bit of an advantage, it sounds like it's not an advantage that would persuade me to shell out almost $100 more, and even more possibly for the motherboard. I can use that money in better ways.

ok so heres my thing about this...why not cheap out?? i mean wats the use in paying 100 dollars for an extra like 2 fps in some games and 5 in others ??? at 80% speed it seems damn close to full speed and perfectly playable...sound would be smooth and it would be alright...so theres my two sense hope it helps

IMO it just feels wrong, not authentic at all. Playing a game at 75-80% fps is sluggish and ruins the 'suspension of disbelief' so to speak. You become more aware of moving slowly than concentrating on the game itself.
But that's merely opinion, some people even find 50% speeds playable.
The core i7 walks circles around Phenom 2 and Thuban. The extra cores are not utilized (and extra threads for i7 as well) in most real world applications.
Clock for clock the core i7 demolishes thuban and they overclock great (thuban's generally overclock well too).

Naoan that's how. Sorry naoan, nothing against you I just had to say it

.
:p
I have this itch to mention clock speed whenever someone write Intel and AMD in the same post, and wonderfully people seems to jump against it to prove something. I dunno what and why. :p
Lot's of time it's because of people giving false info.
I'm in the same boat as Granville and also leaning towards an AMD X6. What makes me indecisive is the DDR2 vs DDR3 factor. I think emulation speed is somewhat affected by the speed of the RAM on the host. Not sure how much of a factor that is though, in terms of FPS/VPS gained.
Intel blows AMD away on everything, but you have to pay for it. Theres no way I can afford a I7, I might go quad core late next year.
I had the best AMD dual core on the market, decided to try intel (hated intel ever since pentium 4 days). I bought the cheapest dualcore (the E5400 a rebadged intel core2) intel had, it was $70 cpu, I was laughing so hard at this....a 2.7ghz thats going to be faster than a 3.2ghz AMD ....ha
Needless to say I was eating my words for breakfast lunch and dinner, with leftovers the next day. The intel smoked the AMD so badly theres no point in comparing, then I overclocked from 2.7 to 3.24......Im very happy.
and there you have it.
EDIT: More importantly Dolphin didnt work very well on the best amd dually (too slow to play). This Intel is running my games at 60fps... again im happy. Let alone get an I7 QUAD! (or six core).
One more thing, Architecture is EVERYTHING, the Pentium D is the worst CPU ever made (Well maybe behind the P4...), and also the worst implementation of Dual Core ever made aswell. I had a Pentium D @ 3.2ghz IT WAS HORRENDOUS, It was slower than my AMD dually (which is what turned me off of intel for 2 years). But as I said my Core2 has made me very happy.
A former AMD fanboi now a very happy intel fanboi (and in the 90s a apple fanboi now a happy windows fanboi about to become a linux fanboi)
Have fun!

Hell I would probably continue the debate if we hadn't already done a thread on this a couple months ago. IMO your viewpoint is correct, but only in certain circumstances, although I agree that clock rate isn't everything I do think you underestimate it's importance in modern x86 cpus. And I'll leave it at that since I don't want to start another debate. Btw thanks for taking my post so well, some people on this forum might have overeacted to that...I wasn't sure if I should post it at the time.
