Well, the difference between 720p and 1080p resolution rendering is actually massive. On 720p, the graphics card has to draw ~933,000 pixels at any given time, on 1080p the graphics card must draw over ~2 million pixels. So there is literally a 50% difference between the two.
The 360 and PS3 can actually render games at 1080p, and theoretically 2500x1600, too.

The problem? They lack the power to render a good-looking game at that. MOST 360/PS3 games are rendered at around 640p and upscaled to the desired resolution.

Speaking of 2500x1600.... I need a new monitor. Tongue
The only native-1080p game I have on ps3 is Lair, and it's very choppy and the textures are quite low quality. It doesn't really look that good tbh despite the high resolution.

Nearly all the games are either 640p or 720p
Final Fantasy 13 on PS3 is native 1080p.
It isn't upscaled.
Theoretically, 1080p is better than 720p, no doubts. But when it is compared visually, you will NOT AT ALL notice any difference between them if you are watching it on TV. (If you watch TV from ideal range.) and if you are sitting from TV at a distance of two TV width, you will notice very small, avoidable difference.

No, it's not. Lol. It's 640p, and that's why it looks so good.

Up-scaling is actually a better idea for consoles than rendering at 1080p, because of what the guy above said, and the fact that it helps mask the low-res textures and low-polly meshes that console games have to use.... though now a lot of games are countering that by making draw distances nothing (lots of corridor shooters).
Both PS3 and XBOX 360 can accurately scale upto 720p, then they have to use 1080p upscalement.

Basically 1080p is the extreme limitation for a chip now. Even 720p is a full exams of them. And upscaling is good alternative to render and maybe in use until higher range than 1080p is launched...
I know that wii is 480p, xbox360 720p,ps3 1080p (it requires a full hd tv), pc 2560x1600 Tongue, pc can run every xbox 360 and ps3 games at 2560x1600, obiouvsly, pc game are a lot more detailed and have textures with a better quality so they're heavier!Smile
so wii had to draw 300.000 pixels, x360 920.000, ps3 2 milions and pc 4 milions!! So pc is much far better, ad with dolphin, I can play wii games at 1080p!Tongue And all x360, wii and ps3 games are made with a pc, so trailers can be at 1080p!Smile
They no doubt use an emulator to prepare a trailer, much like Ensata for NDS...
