@naoan lol yea.
ok. this is CRAZY (AS STATED 1000 times before.).

-------Points--------
The wii is weak. Its ram and gpu cant hold up 60 fps (or even 50 pal.) at 1080p
It is retarded for a machine to emulate it's self just so it can be forced to use higher resolution.
Upscaling does not deal with rendering. it cant improve quality more than .03 %.

And with that. CASE CLOSED!
What he said :p.
So, I too had to create an account to give my reply (one month later haha) but technically, wouldn't it be possible to code a Wii virtualizer (mostly) for the PS3 (which also runs native PPC code), emulate only the graphic hardware of the wii through the SPCs, and then output native 1080p on a HDTV ? (Also wiimote could be connected via bluetooth .... ) This is already less than a crazy idea isn't it ? =p
Except for the fact that no one is able to hack ps3 enough for it to give homebrew developer access to any hardware inside the ps3, even the (now, was) official linux support only permit one cell core access.

Also, developers has complained that making game is hard enough for ps3, how do you think making an emulator would be? Of course we cannot rule out a bored group of brilliant coder may up for the challenge but they need to overcame the above obstacles first...

IMO it's a waste of time since we have a good functional wii emulator coupled with extra goodness in PC already.
hum ... i really thought yellow dog linux for ps3 can access the ppe, all (except one) spu , and rsx ram ... but yeah it would probably be far too hard to code a multithreaded emulator for altivec ... i guess =) Thanks for the reply! (My main idea was just "bring the 1080p wii to your living room")
I remember people saying that Yellow Dog linux on PS3 isn't really a pleasant experience because of the limited hw access, I'm pretty sure they locked the RSX out and allow only access to a core.

BTW, You seems to know more about the inside than me (had to google some of those term :p) I'm just thinking logically and realistically that at this point of time, wii on ps3 is too far fetched of an idea.

I mean, we haven't even crack the console yet... Now if it's X360, I'm not so sure...
Ah naw i don't know much really ;p But since the xbox is also a PPC based system, and graphics are by also by ATI... and then there's 3 cores ... Well another idea lol ... I like to suggest ideas like that cause if I had the skills (and obviously i don't have them) I'd so try to pull off something like that (me? i'm just happy with my Wii though HAHAHA)

well, all the big 3 consoles now are based on the IBM POWER-architecture (ps3 cell, 360 xenon, wii broadway) and use the same instruction set (with a few unique add-ons for each)

Though, as of today there is no known way to access the rsx gpu in PS3 through linux or homebrew.
So even if you got a ppc-optimized dolphin to work on ps3 it would have to render all graphics on the cpu which would result in very low fps.

Also ps3 only runs 64-bit instructions, but broadway uses modded 32-bit POWER-arc instructions[1]. Dolphin would still have to do some intepretation and translation so it can't run native on ps3
So I guess it WOULD be a bit too much of a hassle to actually be worth trying... sadly =(

Uhm, maybe you just intentionally didn't mention it, but just in case:
a) there was an exploit in earlier firmware versions which allowed OtherOS to access the RSX
b) via geohots exploit the RSX can be accessed as well
c) that PSJailbreak thing might allow to run homebrew as well. No real idea about this though.

There was also a limited effort to modify the open source nouveau driver to support the RSX in linux, but AFAIK it didn't get beyond simple 2D acceleration. More recent efforts apparently showed that 3D accel might be possible with few changes to the nouveau code, but no one felt like doing that I guess.. (prolly because it's still quite cumbersome to set up a homebrew env for the ps3...)
