Well you get the boot screen with the windows logo animation, then after that it goes dark as though the logon on screens about to pop up and then the monitors Power light turns orange meaning theres no input to the monitor, then thats it, no sound, no mouse cursor, nothing, if it wasn't for the fans, LED's and the odd noise from the watercooling system you wouldnt know it was turned on.
This may sound like an odd question but how did you get your copy of win 7? I had a friend who downloaded is from msdn and had a similar issue. I told him to redownload it and he said it worked, probably not your issue since you probably bought a hard copy but I might as well ask just in case.
Our University has an e-academy with msdn for computing students (we basically get any and all microsoft software for free, xp, vista, 7, server os's, visual studio 08 & 2010, etc......strangely only thing we don't get is officeHuh), downloaded off there, burnt to a disc back in september when i first installed it and it worked fine(also kept a digital copy on my backup partition, tried those 2 which didn't work so i redownloaded and still nothing).

It has to be a hardware fault but i haven't had any blue screens, i did have a windows 7 error a month or 2 before this happened, but after 7 couldnt fix itself i restarted the computer and it worked fine so i figured it was a one off (all computers have off days sometimes, and the issue never happened again), it wasnt very helpful anyway just a bunch of hex figures (google was no help either).

Problem with my computer is in the space of just under 2 years i've changed the motherboard, ram, cpu, psu, heatsink, heatsink system (air to water), case, hell the only thing which is the same is the 500GB hdd which i started out with and the sony dvd rewriter (which has broke today....it's not been my month this month all my computers have broke in some way this month), so i can't really tell what parts failing (if it was to be put down to old age). I'm wondering if it is my 500GB hdd that has the issue to be honest, it is basically the oldiest part of my rig. If it isn't that then i'm guessing it's going to be one of the those cases where you have to wait and see which part finally fails.

Oh well planning on going for a revamp later this year, figure it's time to get updated probably to an i7 (if i can really bring myself to part with my cash for an overrated quad core....) or maybe i might try an AMD (an x6 maybe) i hear there good when it comes to overclocking and stock speeds.

It's not the HDD. You said windows xp worked and you said the boot animation played with win7. I have to admit I once again didn't completely understand your post, maybe I'm just tired. Let me put it simply, if windows xp works fine then IT'S NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE.

This is the part that I didn't understand

When you say "those 2" what exactly are you referring to? That would seem to imply that both the digital copy and the hard copy didn't work despite you saying that the hard copy worked fine.

Off topic but that is insane! You have a q6600 and water cooling. If you've got a q6600 running at 3.6GHz you have absolutely no reason to upgrade your cpu unless you have shitloads of money just lying around that you can't think of anything else to do with. If so I suggest giving it to me instead Tongue. Just my personal opinion.

Back to the issue. Since it's faster for you to do it yourself (since you have the machine and I don't) then have me prod you for answers question by question I suggest you take a look at this and tell me if it helps: http://www.fonerbooks.com/poster.pdf
I am lost dude...try using another HDD, its worth a try..
So this problem does not have any relation to hardware.Your downloaded Wins7 must be corrupted, try getting another copy somewhere else
Wins7 pro build 7600 works very well for me,i don't even need wins7 ultimate for bitlocker feature

It's not the HDD. It's clearly a software issue if win xp works.

Your right about it being a software issue but that doesn't necessarily mean that a corrupt download is to blame. Especially since he said that it was working fine for awhile which would make no sense if a corrupt download was the problem.

only one way to find out : doesn't the site you get your student stuff from give you a MD5/CRC32/SHA hash so you can check if the downloaded content has the right content?
My housemate was kind enough to lend me her desktop for the day....Win7 installed fine on it (Using my original disc)...

Now i'm getting really frustrated lol, and as for that flowchart....it told me to look at a different one lol.

I've decided when my graphics card gets here today or monday i'm gonna strip to the bare minimum, reset BIOS and if that doesn't work i will probably just give up. This problem might have actually beat me....i need to lie down j/k

*EDIT*

It's in the form of a download manager app which opens from an executable, so i'm assuming it checks itself at the end.
OK i just got Blue Screen Of DeathDodgy ....well sort of BSOD it was BSOD but it wasn't the generic one it turned to a blue screen load of text i couldn't read cause it was scrolling down, then it started booting like normal, this all happened as soon as pressed the start button on 3dmark06... but i think it may have been a glitch in the program because i was playing music from spotify (Paramore - Let The Flames Begin, for those who are nosey)? Just tried it again without spotify and it ran fine so i'm guessing it could of very well of been a glitch?

Or it might be coincedence, i don't know, oh my gt240 came today it's in but i havent got round to trying windows 7 yet, i will probably try tomorrow.

My First Ever BSOD on my comp....Oh well me building it made it last longer than all the manufactured ones i've had
