Yes I did. ^_^
Well, I got too curious and had to see the performance of directx for myself on my own hardware to do a proper comparison.
I guess the results weren't too surprising: directx9 was a few fps faster than opengl, and the opengl plugin under windows performs nearly identically to opengl under linux. So now I'm wondering: why is directx a bit faster, and how can we bring opengl up to the same level? But this is the wrong thread for that.
One weird thing was that the audio sounded terrible on Windows, compared to Linux. It was like I had suddenly acquired massive hearing loss. It sounded like some kind of lowpass filter-- probably some windoze "feature" to make everything sound "better".
Oh, and I'm skeptical that hyperthreading on or off should make much difference... is there any hard data about that anywhere? I don't seem to have the option to turn off HT in my BIOS, and the noht option for the linux kernel is apparently obsolete, otherwise I'd try it myself.
Yes, hyper threading is known to significantly reduce performance with Dolphin as reported by users. I don't know what you are talking about, but I installed Ubuntu for the sole purpose of testing Dolphin about a week ago and Dolphin ran like complete crap. The Linux version was dog slow, kept hanging and audio wasn't all that great either, the Windows version is a much better choice for Dolphin right now. Audio with Dolphin on Windows is fine, even with my onboard Realtek audio I notice no issues with the quality of audio except for crackling in some games which was due to a DSP commit and hasn't been fixed yet.
I wonder if enabling OpenCL will give some more FPS?
@ ivanq: Well, the audio isn't perfect. But that's not windows, it's Dolphin. The music in ZTP has some light but strange issues like some instruments being louder than others...and in some music the bass is pretty strong (at least if you have a subwoofer). And most games kinda have a bit lowered audio quality. It's the HLE plugin in its current state...
Reason why peolpe want the LLE plugin to come to life hmm :p.
yeah, well, or some fixing of the HLE plugin...any work on Audio would be welcome :|
how the plugins are built? Are they included in the compile processing? And is there anyway to edit them or at least viewing their code?
Plugins are part of the source, just as all of Dolphin.
As for the HyperThreading stuff, we had this on one of the commits lately. YieldCPU (on Windows) causes logical CPUs to hand off some processing to other threads, since it doesnt need it right now. Without HyperThreading, or when its disabled, it doesn't do anything. I can't find the blog post of the Microsoft guy explaining how it works, but that should be about it. Another blog post dealt with SQL Server and HyperThreading, which was also negatively affected by it (due to spin-waiting in certain cases).
