use windows
Well, that is a solution I've discarded: I have no windows license and I don't want to buy one. Besides, performance of video decoding in a VM with tight resources is a big question...
Of course, if "use windows" was one of my considered options then there would be no question to ask. I've just used windows.
Previously I have discarded:
a) Using windows either in VM or direct hardware
b) Using a real Wii, Roku, Tivo or any other hardware (I would like to use my linux mediacenter as the only equipment attached to my tv)
c) Using Playon.tv (it needs a windows server somewhere in your lan)
d) Using boxee application (it has no support for Netflix)
e) Using Wine: silverlight doesn't run fine in wine
All these are discarded. The only doubt right now is about the dolphin emu + wii channel/dvd combo.
Best,
Jose

linux is more like a car...
there is no end in fixing things
Linux, linux. I'm trying to make it run on top of Mythbuntu (ubuntu 10.10 with mythtv preconfigured)
Best,
Jose
maybe you can try to enable the wii menĂ¼ + wii channel
by installing it.. i think i saw a old thread about it...
and i think that basic networking is implemented in dolphin
because network gaming with hamachi should work?!
not tested but i saw some threads about joining a game
try it with dolphin and a netflix iso
(discarded because the netflix cd is not more working)
or
1. try to find the wii menĂ¼ / wii channel thread and look if it bascially is working
2. try to find the netflix wad file?!
3. start it?
i think netflix isnt using the nintendo network, which isnt implemented
i don't get it. what linux distro are you using? if you are using one without a working browser and flash player than what are you doing with it? my point here is that you can stream videos from the website itself. why would you emulate a wii streaming netflix?

I'm using ubuntu 10.10.
Actually, there's no way to stream videos from the website itself, since you need (if using a browser) to use windows+silverlight, it is not flash.
Hence the idea of emulating a wii+netflix channel from the ubuntu machine to be able to access to netflix content.
There's probably a silverlight alternative for Linux/MacOS, have you tried looking into those?

Don't bet on Netflix ever working on Dolphin. There are many problems with that considering you would be accessing Nintendo's network, Dolphin would instantly be detected and barred/banned from Nintendo and the Dolphin project could possibly get in trouble by accessing Nintendo's network. I think desmume (or was it iDeas?) tried to implement online capabilities and quickly pulled it due to such problems.

Yes, I know about moonlight. The point is that moonlight doesn't implement the DRM part of Silverlight (provided by Microsoft PlaySure or PlayRight, I don't remember exactly the name). Microsoft supports Moonlight but *not* the DRM part. Without it, Moonlight isn't able to play netflix streams.
I wasn't aware of the Nintendo Network issue. To be truth, I've almost given up in this path to be able to access Netflix from my linux box directly. Probably I'll cancel my membership and migrate to amazon video service or just wait until somebody in netflix decides to support some other OSs.
Best,
Jose
The linux crowd has been wanting netflix support for years. Netflix will not support linux. Currently the only way to use Netflix is to install windows on top of linux in virtualbox or vmware. However some people do not want to use Windows. I'd be willing to donate 10$ if it would help get somebody to get netflix working on Dolphin in linux.
my suggestion would be to use wine or wtf ever to get it to work. xp is probably almost free these days. it would take you so much less time and effort to create a dual boot setup with xp and watch netflix that way. netflix probably paid and contracted ms for the type of streaming video used. naturally, microsoft will protect its bottom line by keeping it as proprietary as possible.
I don't think anyone is going to have the Wii menu working with online capabilities anytime soon. I guess the only thing left to say is that if you insist on using something that is not capable of fully supporting Netflix, you're not going to be able to use it.
