I got a different fan. It's 120 mm vs the original 80mm that didn't clear the ram. At idle, it's down to 22c from 26c. At full load with prime95, it's down to 46-47c from 60c. It's also not as loud. This is with the X3440@3.00 Ghz. I haven't tried to see how high I can go yet. I have 6 temperature readings from the motherboard. One for each core, one that seems to be the average of the cores ( Tcase?), and one somewhere on the board that stays at 26c. My original plan was to overclock until the core temps got to about 65c at full load, and be happy with that. What I've been reading about TjMax hasn't made it clear to me yet. Tjunction, the connection between the cores, is the hottest part of the chip, the likely failure point, and it's temperature can not be directly measured. The TjMax for this chip is 105c, so if I keep Tcase at least 20 degrees less than TjMax, 85c, I won't break anything. I'm not sure if that's the right way to think about it or not.
E8400@3.0 Ghz: Fullspeed when out in front and no other cars are on screen. Drops into the 40's at times. Two player halfspeed.
E8400@3.6 Ghz: Almost always fullspeed. Sometimes a steady 60, sometimes alternates between 59 and 61. Two player about 50 fps at fastest.
X3440@2.53 Ghz: Gets close to fullspeed, but I never saw over 55 fps. Drops to 30's at times. I didn't try two player.
X3440@3.0 Ghz: This is where I am now. It feels just like the E8400@3.0 Ghz. Same speeds I've had for a year.
X3440@3.6 Ghz: Almost always fullspeed. hopefully slightly faster than the E8400, but hard to tell.
I may set the E8400 up again and compare the speed of the cup select screen. I have never had that at fullspeed. The X3440@3.6 Ghz gets 46 fps. Is there a better way to measure?
Quote: So are you saying that you never measured the fps difference between the systems? While my measurement process wasn't the most scientific, it wasn't completely seat of the pants either. I played the same game for every test, Mario Kart Wii. I think the best place to compare speeds would be the cup select screen, but I didn't write them down for the E8400.
