Xbox 360 controller keeps disconnection

I'm having this weird issue where my xbox 360 controller (wired) keeps disconnecting and reconnecting whenever I play super super smash bros brawl. To make things even more confusing it only does it when I'm in a match. When i look down at my controller it actually shows it disconnecting and reconnecting. When I stop the emulation or pause the match the controller stays connected. This is 100% repeatable. Anyone know what's going on?
