x64 MUCH slower than x86; Weird Vista problems

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else encountered something like this... I dual-boot XP32 and Server 08 x64 (Basically Vista SP1). In XP32, everything works great, but it's a little slow (understandably). In Vista64, however, using the 32-bit version (IL or not), there are numerous hangs and weird graphic glitches, but it generally runs at about the same speed as in XP32. The 64-bit version, however (whether I use dual-core or not) runs at about 3-5 fps (as compared to about 20-25 for the 32-bit) in addition to all the same weird graphics glitches I get in 32-bit for this OS.

I've so far only tested Zelda TP Gamecube on revisions 2972 and 2962 (same results for x86, x86IL, and x64 versions of each... the x64IL doesn't seem to want to boot the game at all). In each, I've tried dualcore on/off (makes a big difference on the x86 builds, but on x64 no difference at all), and Dynarec on. DSP is off (there's no sound in zelda anyway... seems to speed up both versions) and graphics is using OGL. I'm planning to test other games, configurations, etc. I'll also give Win7 x64 a try (once I get a hold of it, which should be soon) and see what the results are there. I can (hopefully) OC and get the x86+XP version playable fast, but I was wondering what sort of problems there were with 64-bit.

My configuration:
- Intel core 2 duo E6600 at sock speed (2.4 GhZ)
- Radeon HD 4850 at 625 MhZ
- 3GB RAM (mixed vendors) at stock speed
- ASUS P5B Deluxe
- Other stuff...

Thanks for any insights you can provide,
All the best,
fraserofthenight

For the record, 64IL isn't working yet.
And your win Server 08 must definitely differ in something with common Vista 64 setups, 5 fps on a E6600 is just unreasonable.

Has any of the devs tested Dolphin on a Windows Server system?
About Windows 7 x64, if you manage to get good drivers, you'll get a lot more speed than on your XP x86.

EDIT: By the way, what catalyst drivers are you using for each OS?

You can't download it from them anymore but you can download the latest build from other places, and go to M$ website give them your email and they will give you a product key 32-bit or 64-bit for free Smile

Thanks all for your help!

Yeah I read that, but I just wanted to give it a try, since the build was available. I should be building from source, but I'm lazy ;-P

The kernel in Server 08 is the same as in Vista SP1, as are all the drivers. The main difference between Windows Client & Windows Server lies in the included features (and licensing/support/etc). It probably has something to do with my particular config; a vanilla Server 08 install with no features/roles added is basically a stripped-down & rebranded Vista SP1 install.

Newest on each (Server 08 64 drivers = Vista 64 drivers)

Not on MSDN ;-P!

Check out http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/ . A lot of gamers use Server 08 because it comes with a number of services disabled by default. Also, there's some talk about it being faster because it doesn't include protected data path (DRM) stuff supposedly... Likely this is just a rumor. And yes, it uses all the same drivers as Vista does since it's the same kernel.

Probably this isn't your issue, but if you are using Catalyst 9.4 you may have some memory leak problems after 10 - 20 minutes of gameplay in Dolphin.

I personally haven't experienced this (using 8.9) but some users at Dolphin Google Code reported it.

The more i hear about Windows Server, the more i get interested on it.
I'm looking forward to set up a domain and also use that computer for playing and cad, so useless services disabled by default are a real lifesaver.
Do you think there will be a Server version of Windows 7?

I'll give it a try.

Err... depends what yo mean "based off of". XP uses NT5.1. Server '03, Home Server, and XP x64 use NT5.2. Vista/Server 08 use NT6.0. Win7 uses NT6.1, and I assume there will be a server product based on this kernel, too.
