Make sure you update your 360 controller drivers. The ones included in Windows 7 are ancient. - http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/xbox-360-controller-for-windows

I wouldn't talk about downloading games here if I were you ..
I also use XBox360 controllers (wireless) for some games ..
They also work with very old revisions ..

Here's like I always do it:

1. Connect the controller to your laptop (press the home button until the light is illuminating at the "1")
2. Open Dolphin
3. Choose the Configs for GC Pad or the Wii-Mote (Emulated Wii-Mote)
4. Click on "Refresh", then under "device": choose "XInput/0/Gamepad"
5. Then you can create your own profile as you wish Smile

And maybe check this also:

-> click "Confic"
-> then click "GameCube"
->"Port 1" (If there is "<nothing>" you have to choose "Standard Controller"

Btw. There is a HD-remake of Sonic Adventure 2 for the PC, so you won't need Dolphin for it ..
