My daughter was just given a PC that has a socket LGA775. I was thinking of upgrading the CPU to Intel Core2 Quad Q8400. Is there any way Dolphin would run on that? or even the Intel Core2 Quad Q9705 (which is the best I could upgrade to)?

Thanks

I don't see why it wouldn't. Dolphin runs on my Athlon II X2.

Now, in terms of performance, it might not be too good, depending on game.
in a perfect world we would all be piles of sand with no ability to form coherent bodies of body

By which he means that any of the demanding games (and a lot of popular games are quite demanding) won't run at fullspeed, and that most people wouldn't class the speed they ran at as playable.
OS: Windows 10 64 bit Professional

Well, what if we compared it to AMD-FX8350? That's what my PC is. I realize AMD is not awesome with dolphin, but I'm at about 50% playable rate with the games I've tried.

So the best Intel Core2 vs the FX-8350?

I don't think there is any Core 2 duo / 2 Quad could be equivalent to your CPU in Dolphin
Your CPU may not be the best CPU for Dolphin but it isn't that weak
Base on our bencchmark , FX-8350 stock = i5 2500k @ 3.3GHz (underclocked) .
Since Dolphin is a dual core application ...Don't expect good result with Core 2 Quad , it won't be a huge improvement over Core 2 duo (Core 2 Quad clock speed is lower anyway)
If i was you , i will replace that mobo with H81 mobo , maybe DDR3 RAM (if yours are DDR2) and Pentium Haswel G3220 which is equivalent to FX-8350 @ 5.0GHz in Dolphin
