Hello,

We tried our locally sourced new super mario bros rips and it worked fine without Wii Motes (couldn't navigate around unfortunately). However, the moment we attached the Wii Motes we'd lose sync or hard freeze after 60-70~ frames. I was looking at the source and it looks like a completely different network path in comparison to gc. Searching on the forums and various wiki's I'm finding a lot of people also having trouble for the past couple years, with the general unhelpful answer being: You're doing it wrong.

Any tips? Have Wii Motes ever worked?

Wiimotes don't work very well over netplay, nothing you can do about it afaik.
