Not in any way an expert on this nor do i claim to be but, could a corrupted direct x or visual c dll cause it?
I remember someone having an issue similar to this on pcsx2, and it was a direct x problem.

Bringing my issue here.. my game is still suffering from extremely choppy audio on the latest dev builds. Taking my cpu to 4.2ghz seemed to fix it but is not stable at all and will BSOD within 30 minutes so not worth it. Have read through this thread and tried any fix I can find to no avail.

It means your overclock isn't stable, it's either overheating (though in this case the CPU would throttle itself and not crash) or not enough voltage.

I'm guessing you didn't add enough voltage for the overclock. Before starting to play, run IntelBurnTest, stress level Maximum for at least 10 runs alongside Kombustor(part of MSI AfterBurner, you don't need an MSI card to run it)
Stressing the GPU at the same time of the CPU IS important, even if you just overclock the CPU, here's why.

I've personally found that out the hard way too, got myself a stable overclock, ran prime95 for 24hours without any error but then my PC bluescreened when I tried a game, so I looked it up and found that article. I decided to humor myself and try stressing both CPU and GPU at the same time, it bluescreened within 5 minutes... I had to increase the cpu voltage by 0.01 from my previous voltage increase to get it fully stable with both CPU and GPU.

I'm not sure if this is Trevlec's exact problem, but it seems like crackling inevitably occurs after about 30 minutes or so if you're using custom textures. I'm assuming this is because that function is not perfectly seamless and introduces minor stutters here and there.

If your computer is good enough to run it full speed, try setting frame limit to audio.
