I dunno... this is not like software with a single, simple purpose and once you have a v1.0 it's just bug fixing and adding some features. An emulator is always a work in progress and even though the 4.0 release was considered 'stable' back then it was actually a lot less stable then recent build. There may be a little regression for a hand full of games, but pretty much everything is better in recent builds: they're more accurate yet also faster, have more features, the code is cleaner, almost all sources of crashes have been eradicated, etc...

On the other hand, getting rid of it would also automatically fix 75% of all the help requests on the forum. It doesn't make sense to have an old build labelled as "stable" on the main site (which will cause most people to think that it's the version they should use) when the #1 piece of advice given in every thread on the forum is, "Don't use 4.0.2, because it sucks compared to the latest development version." Most of the technical support problems here are self-inflicted by recommending that people should use a version that is actually less stable than the officially "unstable" builds. It doesn't make any sense.

If it's too much trouble to freeze development while fixes are implemented towards releasing a new stable build, then the concept of stable builds should just be eliminated so that the latest development versions are all that appear on the main download page. Even though some things are broken in the newest builds, it would be pretty hard to find problems that you have to go all the way back to 4.0.2 to fix. Even if that's the case, anyone who reports a true regression is still going to have to test many revisions to bisect the problem down to the exact revision that caused the bug, and while 4.0.2 is a good benchmark for the oldest version someone should try when bisecting a problem, it's hardly a good choice for what people should be using for daily Dolphin activities.

To be frank the main site now has download buttons for the latest dev on top, for the latest stable are down in the bottom of the page and you have to search for it. Even the home page has downloads for the latest dev instead of the latest stable.

Yeah, strange that still so many users come to the forums with issues using 4.0.2 or even 4.0. I guess they got it on other sites where the 'stable' builds are still the only ones downloadable... I guess those sites are the best reason for a new release (I'd even say most of the milestone blocking issues could be ignored).

The position of the download links doesn't matter. A normal user is going to look at the download page, see the word "stable" next to a particular link, and think that he should use that version, because he isn't a developer and thus probably shouldn't mess with a "development version", because the name alone sounds somehow ominous, unstable, unfinished, or otherwise unsuitable for people who aren't developers. Simple nomenclature changes would resolve most of the technical support questions that appear here on a daily basis without interfering with the developers' desire to add new features over fixing old regressions that need addressing before a new stable version can be released.

Just name the latest revisions something like "extreme," or "maximum," builds. Who wouldn't want to use Dolphin Maximum 4.0-9001?

Anyway this all has nothing to do with XBC at this point. Please continue this discussion in Random or some other venue.

BTW, trying to replay this game atm. My old save got deleted a while back. Haven't even saved Juju yet and I keep doing other stuff. I'm going to be overpowered for the rest of the game if I keep leveling up without progressing the story :p

shonumi should be in charge of naming builds. EXTREME MAXIMUM G-FORCE 4.0-6221!!!!!

what is the feel of XBC as an rpg? final fantasy-esque or more like bethesda-esque? even more specifically, ffxii/ffxiii-like or ffx-like? fallout-ish or elder scrolls-ish?

It's pretty similar to Final Fantasy XII, but it's better in pretty much every way, and I don't have to set up Gambits.

I wish I wouldn't get these freezes, stutter and framedrops during battles tho, which are getting worse the longer I play and no option seems to make it run better there.
But I'll power through it, this game benefits from high resolutions so much.
