not necessarily. the stable build 4.0.2 is still supported by the forums, as are all the dev revisions following it. given, the general advice for problems is "use the latest dev if not already", we do still support those builds b/c the dev versions have some bugs the stable doesn't and vice-versa.

@jondos probably not. playing xeno on a laptop is kind of a futile endeavor unless you want to spend a lot of money.

the 4460s is not a laptop processor. @jondos Yes you can probably play it decently although i dont think you can go above 1x ir. That gpu is weak.

If we had a more frequent release schedule, I'd be fine with this statement, but no, 4.0.2 is a fucking year and a half old. While we can claim to support it, nobody intelligent over here actually uses it anymore (outside of special cases) and, as Resus said, it indeed "should not be used anymore". There's numerous known major issues in 4.0.2 that make current regressions look harmless in comparison. It's also slow as fuck nowadays, which really doesn't help me feel any need to recommend it to anyone. AFAIK, there's no regressions that currently affect Xenoblade in particular, so everything should be straight improvement over that shitty old stable build.

Jondos: The CPU/GPU should be fine for >1x IR, but if you have trouble on the graphics side (or just want better-looking graphics), you can always pop in a GTX 750 or 750 Ti. They're both inexpensive (~$150 USD) and have a low enough TDP that you can usually throw one in a prebuilt desktop PC like yours without having to replace the PSU.

(Apologies if this is partially incomprehensible to some – it's 2 AM and I sorely need a drink.)

do they have a date where they're planning on releasing 5.0 stable?

Nope, we're nowhere near ready for a release in terms of the actual process. We need to enter a feature freeze at some point, fix whatever major regressions exist, tag 5.0 in Git and do website work to prominently display 5.0 everywhere, but since we don't really have a single leader figure around anymore (delroth and neobrain have all but left the project) we don't really have anyone who can be bothered to orchestrate all this. Even moving our issue tracker is taking incredibly long compared to what it'd take under someone more motivated.

That's a pity. Dolphin has matured so much this past year and got a lot of attention; it deserves to get a big release.

Either that or we just get rid of stable releases entirely. We don't want idiots using year-and-a-half-old versions of Dolphin, "stable" or not.

Yeah, I guess that would be a solution: Just deleting the download link for the 'stable' build (or at least its prominent position).

getting rid of stable builds would be a bad move imo. while it's foolish to use them, it's better to have a standard tested build than to have general advice be "well that broke yesterday so try the one from 2 days ago".
