Wii U emulation

I already figured it was a Wii U controller (and technically that pic answers my question :p) but I guess I should have asked more precisely, my bad. What's the little demo showing us? Did you hack it to run arbitrary code or something? Looks like fun though.

As a Wii U owner (yeah, I'm the guy that bought one... wait for me to leave before you laugh, please - it's rude), I'd have to question why anyone would want to emulate that sorry little machine in any case. I use mine for playing Wii games and the Virtual Console. Or, rather, I used to...

Portability (laptop = Wii U, SSB Wii U on the road), enhancements (save states, unlimited memory/saves, > 1080p gameplay, custom shaders), the option to run Wii U games with any controller you want (might have to emulate the Wii U pad's screen on-screen still), hardware preservation (even the Tiger Game.com is emulated, the Wii U can't be that bad that it deserves to be erased from history :p), curiosity/challenge (some folks like a challenge or just want to see how far they can go). Fwiw, once the Wii U starts getting more titles, I don't think it will be so maligned in the gaming community (sales have to go up too). Nintendo really botched this console's release, but they can ride it out thanks to the 3DS' current strength. A lot of people are just waiting to see when this game drought ends, imo. First time we actually managed to do it, and it's still a bit buggy (and *very* hacky). No running arbitrary code on the gamepad, there's no real challenge in that (it's trivial to change the firmware of a gamepad). On the Wii U, that's already been done by comex and others several months ago. Now next steps are making it more stable, implementing a nice library that can easily be integrated with, and adding support for it in a few apps (probably including dolphin). Re: Wii U emulation, it's unlikely any of the Dolphin code will be reused, mostly because everyone agrees it's crap. 10-18-2013, 12:41 AM

I want to emulate machines that have good games (particularly those that are available only on that platform), so that these games can be enjoyed in the manner described by Shonumi. The U has crap software. There is, at the moment, almost nothing worth playing and, therefore, almost nothing worth emulating. The mammoth programming ball-ache that is emulation would, to my mind, not be worth it. As for those who say "wait and see..." (and I used to be one such person), I say this: I've been waiting for almost a year, now, and there's fuck-all to play on it. With the coming of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 I believe that the U will become even more marginalised by third-party developers, and die a hopeless death. I'd like to be wrong.

@delroth - Awesome work so far then. Do you guys have a blog or some page that I can keep posted on the updates? Or do you all hang out on a certain IRC channel often? I can see a lot of potential in this work (Wii U pad = cheapest video streaming tablet in town). Keep it up, can't wait to hear more about these efforts
@dh2005 - Well, personally, I can stand to buy a system to only play a handful of games. I really only bought a 360 to play all of the Halo games (except Wars and ODST) + Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean 4. Ditto for the PS3; I only wanted it so I could play Tales of Xillia (which wasn't even scheduled for localization when I got a PS3, and it came out almost two years later). I really only want the Nintendo staples (Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, Zelda, SSB, F-Zero, Kirby), so I'd end up buying the system sooner or later. I'm not saying the Wii U is going to be a hit with me, but I usually end up getting systems regardless of how many games I play on them. I might just be frivolous or something :p |
