Its a drop in the bucket with the PS2's vast library, but getting even that many games to run is enough to impress me.

The very small selection would imply that they are customizing a base PS2 emulator for each game, like how Nintendo does VC titles.

True but for 15 years it's much smaller than you would expect. I suppose I should change that to 8 years though since the difference in single threaded performance between the 6th and 7th gen consoles is still pretty big. It slowed down from the 6th to 7th generation and stopped completely from the 7th to 8th generation.

Part of the reason for this is the increasing focus on multithreaded performance over singlethreaded. And the other part is the decreasing use of die area for cpu resources in each generation.

@MaJoR

That combined with very good optimization would make sense.

Of course. I'm sure the last 15 year period showed a much larger improvement.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. I think the jaguars are an improvement in some ways. They have good brand predictors, more cache, much smaller cache miss penalties, etc.

At the very least you don't have to micromanage them as much to get decent performance out of them, unlike the cpu's last gen.

This is all completely true. But while their IPC is around double that of the PPE as a result of these and many more improvements the clock rate is only half. Giving them about the same performance per core (slightly more technically) than their predecessors. They have about the same singlethreaded performance and around 3x the multithreaded performance of the xenon cpu. The main reason for this is most of the die area and power consumption in these new SoCs goes to the IGP. You can of course understand why being that these are game consoles after all.

Btw it's nice to see someone active in this subforum with some solid background knowledge in microprocessor components.

Well, I'm no expert, but I enjoy reading the real pros discuss this type of stuff on beyond3d.

I remember that place. I thought they became inactive around 7 years ago?

The forum is still active, and some devs still visit semi regularly.
