Dolphin immediately crashes when trying to play the NTSC-J version of this game. There's a similar problem with SMG1 NTSC-J, but instead of crashing it's a black screen with 0fps. Tried 3.0 and a recent build. Any advice?

This is what exceptioninfo.txt says:

Have you tried to go into Config/Wii and set System Language to "Japanese"?

Hi,
I've not found any issues reported about this:
loading from the in-game save state, not the Dolphin one, I get updated stars, coins, etc... but lives are always reset to 4; using the emulator save states all values are restored. Is it a known bug? Tested with Dolphin from 3.5-480 to 3.5-513 x64, Win8-x64.

In-game save states emulate exactly how real hardware saves, e.g. in Wii games how the Wii saves to internal memory or your SD card. When you start a game and load up and in-game save with Dolphin, that's equivalent to turning the Wii on/playing the game from the Disc Channel. When you save your game then close Dolphin or stop the game, that's equivalent to turning the Wii off/quitting and returning to Home Menu. On a real Wii, your lives are reset to 4 every time you start the game.

Contrast this with save states. Save states create a sort of "snapshot" of the game. It's very percise; all of the emulated game code that was running, all of the variables and such are preserved (this is grossly simplified, but you get the idea). When you load up a save state, you load up the exact same conditions under which it was saved. Essentially, the emulated game doesn't really see that you've quit the game. Again, gross simplification, but imagine being able to freeze a moment in time and being able to walk back to that instant whenever you wanted; that's analogous to save states.

When you save a save state with 15 lives, for example, you'll get 15 lives when you load it again. With in game saving, the game's code automatically resets to lives to 4 when it boots. In short, it's not a bug, you're just experiencing the differences between two different methods of saving. Other emulators would do the same thing, especially since many Mario games reset the lives counter.

Sorry, I was convinced that the lives behavior was like in new super mario bros wii, and thought the cause was a memory corruption... Blush
Thank you anyway for the kind reply Shonumi. Big Grin
