I needed a sensor bar and I heard that the Wii sensor bar doesn't need to be connected to a computer. It only needs a power source, so I connected it to my Wii U. The problem is that so far, the Wii U only gives power to the sensor bar when I am in the old Wii Menu. Is there any way I could use the sensor bar while I am in the Wii U mode, not the Wii mode?

Also, if I found a way to connect the sensor bar to a power outlet, would that work?

As far as I know, the Wii U mode will only turn on the sensor bar when you are playing a game that uses the pointer and a Wii Remote is connected to the Wii U. So for practical purposes, no, you can't. (Unless there's some homebrew that lets you do it, maybe?)

If you have a power supply with the right voltage, it should work.

If you connect a Wiimote to the Wii U while in the Wii U menu and leave it connected it will keep the sensor bar on as well. (I have 5 Wiimotes total Tongue)

AFAIK there is no Homebrew that turns on the Wiimote (unless you count using Haxchi to install a Wii game onto the Wii U virtual console)

EDIT: Also TIL that you can boot right into vWii mode without a Wiimote connected, while keeping the B button pressed when turning on your Wii U. (Stil have to test it though.)

Yes, that's what I said. It works, but it's annoying because the Wii Remote will disconnect automatically after not too long.

Oh sorry, I thought you meant also starting a game that supported it. Because that is not needed.

Running the main menu of the console also works, since you can use the pointer there. I should've been more clear and not have said just "game".

Yep right now I'm using a fifth controller to connect to the Wii U when I need the sensor bar. I have too wait for the Wii U to start up into Wii mode. Then the wiimote disconnects after a while and I have to press the buttons on it to sync it again. I'll try connecting the sensor bar to a power outlet and if that doesn't work I'll just buy a wireless one.
