Does anyone know anything about any progress being made on this game or why the characters are all discolored in newer revisions? Is there a better place to let the devs know it's messed up?

Love the Dolphin project. It's a beautiful work. But this awesome classic staple of Nintendo runs soooooo baaaad on it. It's like Dolphin is Scarlet Johanssen and this game is a big wart oozing pimple puss on the end of her nose. Would I still do her? Sure, but someone should fix that up.

I have the same problem with NTSC. So maybe a setting is causing this?

How did you check both the pal and ntsc version? Tongue

This game has gotten much, much , much more playable in the newer revisions but it's still not quite there yet. So here's a few things I've noticed.

1. The main problem is still based around the sound. In HLE it seems like once the game slows down for any reason (actually it can only happen in two places, while you're picking a circuit match & whenever the referee starts talking, it'll persist to other areas of the game after that but it always starts in one of those two places) it kind of desyncs the sound or something and it just can't recover and remains garbled. I also dumped my LLE files and using the LLE plugin the sound works perfectly except of course it also seems to be linked to the speed of the game and so there's some cracking but it never gets all garbled like HLE. HLE gameplay is smoother all around but the awful sound and the slow mo that the game becomes once the ref steps on the screen and the sound starts messing up makes it almost impossible to play correctly, especially since a lot of the gameplay is based off audio cues for the player.

2. THE COLOR OF THE BOXERS IS STILL ALL PASTY WHITE. I wish I could point out the specific revision that broke the color on the boxers because they used to be fine. Not game breaking at all, just really weird and annoying. DBZ Budokai 3 is also a similar sort of cell shaded game and it doesn't have the same problem, although I'm sure the two games are probably apples and oranges.

3. The new Accurate VBeam Emulation switch. If you're familiar with Twilight Princess and how if you run the game at 60fps it will run but the animations are really, really, really, fast well thats what happens when you put a check in VBeam Emulation with Punch-Out!!. It is so fast. I THINK if I could limit the framelimit to 30fps like with LoZTP with VBeam emulation checked the game AND sound would run flawlessly since it seems to be all about speed. BUT (there's always a "but")... if you enable VSync or put in a manual framelimit with VBeam checked then the game will not progress past the white Wii warning opening screen to try it out.

Anyway thats all I got and obviously I'm no expert but I really think If a dev can figure out why the game wont start with a framelimit on using Accurate VBeam Emulation then that (and of course fixing the character colors) would make this game not just 100% playable but 100% perfect.

HAHA!

I have also tracked down the revision where the color of the boxers got broken! (Issue 3676)

The boxers are correct in 6503. They became whitewashed in 6505 whose description is "Change comparison in specular light function. Fixes issue 1258.". There is no revision 6504 available for download.

Hopefully someone can let one of the devs know and thanks for the great work!

EDIT- OMGWOW!!!!!!! OK so everyone knows the biggest problem with the game is the sound. Well if you use the LLE sound plugin and enable audio throttling and disable vsync or any frame limitations the sound problem is gone!!! YAY!!!!11 You will notice when you do it that the framerate fluctuates a bit in game BUT it plays smooth the whole time and the sound never messes up. This ONLY works with the LLE plugin, the HLE plugin is still borked. It makes this game at least 100 times more playable, w00t!

--I did find another small graphic problem though. The crowd in the arenas (at least in the exhibition Glass Joe arena) doesnt show up if you use the DX11 plugin no matter the settings. They show up fine with DX9 in all settings.--

You Dolphin guys rock!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent job Rei, Now I can fire up punchout without having to deal with that annoying pale look. My sound is still a bit stuttery but I'm sure i must play around with my settings a bit. Thanks

Still trying to get this right. Here are the best settings I've found with the latest revision (6929). I'll just list the ones that matter, I've tried everything and nothing else seems to have any effect.

Punch Out!! NTSC

Special Settings:
-LLE Plugin is a !!!!MUST!!!! if you dont want any sound errors. HLE is faster and has less crackling but produces weird sound errors during knockdowns.
-Lock Threads to cores (only if it applies to you) makes a nice difference
-EFB -> RAM provides much smoother game play than EFB -> Texture. Texture provides slightly better frame rates most of the time, but when a knockdown occurs it goes all kinds of bad while RAM stays smooth.
-Use Integral Scale. Fractional scale shows weird small glitches with the way the characters are drawn.
-MUST turn off EuroRGB60 or game will not start!

Problems:
-All of the boxers are a shiny white color. This was broken in revision 6505 which messed with specular lighting and has not been reverted/fixed as of yet. (issue 3676)

-MAJOR slowdown when selecting an opponent in career mode. Might be related to the big "WHOOSH" noise when you enter that screen, but still happens when "no audio" is selected in the plugins so I donno.

-Crowd in Minor Circuit arena does not show up at all with any settings using DX11 plugin. Works perfectly in DX9.

-The game speed is weird. In recent revisions it seems like it uses audio throttling whether you have it enabled or not. This makes it pretty much impossible to get 60fps during a fight, 20-40fps seems about average, but the game play stays mostly very smooth. If you try to cap at 30fps the game only runs at 50% speed. This just happened recently because not long ago the game would play at 60fps in all areas (except the opponent selection in career and during knockdowns) although the sound was much much worse. Really seems like forced audio throttling. <----- I figured out this is linked to EFB>Ram which I know is slower than EFB>Texture but still very very weird the speed problems it causes.

-VBeam options do weird things. Speeds up the game a ton BUT input controls dont work.

And that's really about it. On a scale of 1-100 I'd give this game an 70-75% on the Dolphin score right now. LLE doesn't have any sound bugs except a bit of crackle pop. Game play is smooth and full speed even though it wont hit 60fps anymore in fights. You can play the game from start to finish. The shiny white boxers... bleh they're ugly but nothing a dev can't fix.

So play some PunchOut!! Glass Joe was talkin smack!

Edit- I should say my PC specs. i7 860 @2.8, 5870, 6 gigs RAM, Win7 64 bit

The latest revision fixed the lighting. The game runs pretty nicely for me. 60 fps during the fights for the most part. If the camera pulls out a bit, it might drop to 47-50. Cutscenes are about 50% speed. Sounds works fine sometimes, but some things are in super slomo.

Overall, it's very playable.
