[Wii] new super mario bros item pickup

I'm pretty new to dolphin, but not that new to game platform emulators. recently Ive downloaded dolphin 3.0 and started playing new super Mario bros Wii, and ran into a problem where i am not able to pick up any items, the games instructions are to hold 1 and shake, I've tried that and probably all other button/movement combinations with no success. I am using a keyboard and a mouse to play the game(don't have a Wii controller).

if anyone knows how to fix this please do share.

Do you have any controller? I use a xbox 360 controller and emulate the Wiimote and use it in classic mode (sideways mode)
