The original Nintendo "-TR" Wiimotes have a small nose on the plastic thing of the strap. You can use that instead of a pen

It is the "-TR" Wiimotes that are working slightly different than the old non-"TR" Wiimotes. The newer ones need PIN Authentication when syncing the first time. Only then the fast pairing through 1+2 is enabled. Otherwise they just turn off.
