Booted directly to Wii menu, then if I select the Wii disc option, the game is not recognized (question mark over the disc and some japanese text, all without leaving the Wii menu).

I may be doing something wrong though, since apparently this title is trying some fancy stuff with the menu.

Build 5.0 6981, D3D, all defaults

Does Dolphin detect the game as a Japanese game?

It has a japanese flag in the game list, if that's what you mean. I also changed the wii language to japanese, from the options menu
