Yes it is reversible and depending on the game it does take of a fair amount of padding, for example Paper Mario on the GCN or the Wii are only around 300 to 500mb considering that a fully ripped Wii disc without scrubbing is 4.37GB that's a fair amount of space saved.

http://gbatemp.net/t250617-wia-wii-iso-archive

It can compress and decompress ISOs losslessly, or make the compressed file even smaller by removing garbage data.

Here's some information on the tool that is used to compress the iso:

but dolphin can't read wia now can it Wink (and thank god, i dont think its any good at all)

Why would you say that wia isn't any good?
cause i fail to see why it would need ANOTHER compressor or ANOTHER file format.
like .iso / .zip / .rar / .wbfs isn't enough

oorrrr; learn to scrub?
It decrypts the data to make it compressible, and also scrubs the random padding if you want. Plain iso scrubbed will not compress as well as a decrypted scrubbed file.
no but dolphin's compression can

see where im going with this?

I can. Are there any options I can tinker with for the dolphin compressor? There doesn't seem to be the way I'm trying it (right click an iso in dolphin and click compress iso).

Hmm?

Metroid Prime 3:
Compressed with Dolphin - 4.12 GB - Time: 7:50
WIA uncompressed - 3.99 GB - Time:3:57 - 3.1% smaller - 50% faster

Compressed with Dolphin + 7z compression - 4.12 GB
WIA + 7z compression - 2.85 GB - 31% smaller

Wii Play:
Compressed with Dolphin - 106 MB
WIA uncompressed - 91.2 MB - 14% smaller

Compressed with Dolphin + 7z compression - 94.4 MB
WIA + 7z compression - 50.9 MB - 46 % smaller

I'm sorry, but could you please point out where this format fails?

i sure get different (smaller) sizes with dolphin

also, even if you did get a point on the smaller part;
whats the point of a file format if not application can read it

You say you get smaller sizes with dolphin. It is probably because you have different releases than the other person has. Did you see which size you got with WIA?

The source code is available for WIA format, both read and write. Add support for it in Dolphin and voila, the "application" can read it.

It's not always a bad idea to bump an old thread when you have something worthwhile to add, besides, instead of creating a new thread, it shows that he actually searched for what he was looking for and found it.

no i wouldn't need to
because
A) i didn't get a dump of the "releases" youre thinking off. i got the dump myself from my own disc
meaning the data is the same as any legit disc out there. and NORMALLY regions doesn't matter either. (and later versions of the games mentioned should loose data with every version of the game. so ye, busted that one as well)

B) i dont -NEED- the compression because im not a buttpirate that downloads 2894187948189 retarded games that are worse then what i could do with RPG Maker XP. let alone without piracy those games wouldn't be downloaded/played anyway.

i rest my case

EDIT : o and btw, another reason i do not support all those shit formats is cause they are used by buttpirates and buttpirates alone (and cause they are dev'd using simple tools and by not the most intelligent ppl alive)

Then you personally don't need to use the WIA format. But other people can have great use for it as some buy their games, store the games on their HDD and then put the game casing away to not damage it.
I don't really see any reason to not support it. Basically put it as a low rated todo because there's probably plenty of other stuff which is more important.
