Yeah, it's random and I've never been able to nail down what causes it, although I assume it's to do with the ID changing for some reason. I don't use or edit Mii's often enough to even notice that it's happened until it's too late. Although, I haven't used a NAND dump for a long time, so fingers crossed the issue has been fixed in the interim.

Current Dolphin versions randomly generate a MAC address once and store it in Dolphin.ini and every Mii data include the last bytes of MAC address from their creator. If you reset your Dolphin settings or if you update Dolphin from an old build where the MAC address was hardcoded, a new one will be generated. If the new MAC isn't the same from when you created/last edited your Mii, it'll become uneditable. You can fix this by editing Wii\shared2\menu\FaceLib\RFL_DB.dat in a hex editor or by using a Mii Editor software (but nowadays they're really hard to find)...

That's interesting about the RFL_DB.dat file. I have tried, and failed, to find a Mii Editor. Would you be able to write up a short tutorial? Which line to edit, what to change it to, etc?

Well, I have a copy of Datel Mii Manager but I'm not sure if I can share it (it came with a BT adapter sold by Datel -- probably sharing it is piracy). Mii Manager read Mii data from a Wiimote and let you edit it. You just need to go to Mii Channel and copy the Miis you want to edit to your Wiimote, then save changes and close Dolphin. Open Datel Mii Manager and it'll automatically connect to the Wiimote, click "Load from Remote" and choose a Mii. It'll show up in the editor, change the Wii ID to the last 3 bytes of MAC address (found in Dolphin.ini), then save and move back to Wiimote. Now, on Mii Channel, copy the Mii back from the Wiimote and it should be editable again.
If you don't have a Wiimote, you must edit the file manually. Here you find more details about the file format. Also, Mii Manager requires an internet connection to work, and I've never tested Datel Mii Manager with other BT stacks, only with MS stack, so, it may not work at all for -TR Wiimotes...

Um... just point your Wiimote into screen? (or move your mouse to emulation window if you're using an emulated Wiimote)...
