Why is there a speed change from Dolphin 3.5 to 4 on OS X

I'm running OS X 10.9 and for whatever reason Dolphin 4.0 is much slower than 3.5 on my system. This happens on OS X 10.8 too and happens on any game. For example I can play SSBB on Dolphin 3.5 in real time but experience significant lag on Dolphin 4.

Anyone else have these issues?

Please tell us which processor you have, i.e it's number: 2xxx, 3xxx, 4xxx

OSX has horrible OpenGL drivers and the OpenGL plugin was updated. Windows, which has good OpenGL drivers, gets faster with the newer revisions. OSX won't get better until the manufacturers make much better drivers. Linux has similar problems at times, but for the most part has gotten much better drivers and things are playable again.

So yeah, it's not entirely Dolphin's fault. All I can recommend is using the older builds until your graphics drivers are updated to actually work properly with OpenGL 3 standards.

Generally speaking, newer builds tends to be slower than the old ones due improved emulation accuracy...

JMC47: The drivers aren't "horrible" compared to the Windows drivers – you can certainly say they're worse (like, by 5-10fps), but not *that* much worse. And the drivers do actually work properly with GL 3 (aside from the goddamn fucking Intel HD 3000 drivers, someone please stab whoever's in charge of those). Also, manufacturers don't write the drivers, Apple does (likely with some amount of documentation and assistance from the manufacturers). Your arguments are based on misremembered/skewed facts and are invalid. Get a Mac to perf-test with or refrain from commenting in fields of your inexpertise. ಠ_ಠ

Besides, the point here is that moving from 3.5 to 4.0 caused shit speeds, not moving from Windows/Linux to OS X. WTF, man, stop needlessly hating on OSes you don't even use. :<

thed0ctor: Listen to Jhonn, he's got the right idea. 4.0's slower mostly due to accuracy improvements, along with the wonderful GLSL-master merge that's killed my ability to use Dolphin (fuck you HD 3000 I hate you).

Pauldachz: I'm commenting in my fields of inexpertise because the results don't seem to show a "5 - 10" fps decrease, people are complaining about their speeds dropping to half. And, I was wrong about the drivers thing, but that just makes using Mac's even less desirable because it will never be able to use the drivers that the experts (Manufacturers) made.

3.5 - 4.0 (especially latest builds) on Windows makes the emulator go faster. The only reason people complain is the AX-HLE stuttering that didn't use to happen because their computers STILL suck.

It depends of the hadware... If you have a high end rig, then yes, lastest versions may be faster, but, if you have a rig cutting close to Dolphin minimum requirement (which seems the case of thed0ctor), then, latest versions will be slower, regardless of OS.

@Off-topic: I still don't get why people keep complaining about new-hx-hle or DX9 removal, c'mon guys, it improved emulation accuracy a lot (new-ax-hle) and opened room for a lot of improvement (DX9 removal), if your computer can't run the game fullspeed and the audio sttutters, use OpenAL audio backend and despite a small latency, everything will be fine (even when the game doesn't run fullspeed). About DX9 removal, if you have a computer with the minimum system riquirements needed to run games in Dolphin at a playable speed (let's say, 30-60FPS), I'm pretty sure that it'll be able to handle OpenGL or DX11...

Interesting. My rig definitely exceeds Dolphin's minimum requirements (i7 processor at 2.7GHz, 16GB DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of ram). What I think I may have to do is use bootcamp in order to use the Windows builds. Is there anyone who isn't experiencing the slowdown issue that has the same setup as me?
