I'm so confused... I can run games like half life 2 on high textures and shadows etc. But even if I'm on the lowest settings on dolphin, I'm lucky if I get above 10fps... Any ideas? I've just joined so I'm not sure if my specs will show up... They are:

AMD A4-5000 APU quad core 1.5 ghz

AMD RADEON HD 8330 4077 MB

System based x64

Dolphin version - 4.0.2 x64 version

You are not going to run anything in dolphin with tha APU, the cpu is too slow. Dolphin need a recent Intel CPU to work correctly. Also dont compare PC games to emulatprs

Half Life 2 is quite old as far as PC games are concerned, so even if you could compare PC games to emulators, that wouldn't be the best example.

You'll still have to get new hardware to adequately run Dolphin. You could try the latest development versions of Dolphin and using the 64-bit version if you have a 64-bit OS, but that's probably as far as you can go without dropping some cash.

Thanks for that, but does it have to be intel? I'm building a gaming PC and I've found AMD to be better for gaming, but emulation is different... So if I got a top of the range AMD CPU, would it run dolphin?

Not even FX-8350 would beat any Intel CPU recorded on official Dolphin benchmark (the i3-4130 or something, for instance).

That would apply, of course, to the demanding games. If they´re light you should have no problem.
Rig 1: Windows 10 Home | AMD A6-1450 @ 600/1000/1400 MHz | AMD Radeon HD Graphics 8250 | 4GB RAM | HP Pavilion TouchSmart 11.

Rig 2: Windows 10 Pro | Intel Core i7-2640M @ 780/2800/3500 MHz | Intel HD 3000 Mobile | 8GB RAM | Dell Latitude 6320.

Not very well. Intel has better single core speeds, and Dolphin is a dual-core program that relies heavily on the CPU. As per our benchmark, the only AMD CPU to even get anywhere is the top of the line FX-8350 highly overclocked: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkEUvobPn_DcdEo2aEhhdUpnU01tYUtNM3ZVX2d6SkE&usp=sharing#gid=0

Intel is also better for gaming.

The i5-4690K (Haswell refresh) will be your best choice. You can build a cheap desktop for less than $700 with one: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Nrmgator/saved/njx2FT
