Assuming your A/V receiver has a digital interface (it almost definitely does) your audio quality would be noticeably improved if you switched to a digital interface, as stated above.

Not true. Most of the other audio components in the chain will play just as big a role in the audio quality as the speakers themselves depending on how bad the speakers are. Even on my POS speakers the difference between a good audio card and a bad one is night and day.

This depends on your intended type of setup. You'll usually get better sound quality using a good audio card, external dac, or pre/pro hooked directly to a speaker amp.
