I plug my PC into my Samsung DVD Home Cinema system using a standard 3.5mm headphone jack to Red/White RCA cable and it detects Surround Sound(Dolby Pro Logic II) compatible games.
The problem with Sound Cards is the lack of Amplifiers and your limited to 'PC Speakers', Sound Quality is mostly determined by the quality of speakers, the best method for High Quality sound is using
HDMI Audio, connected to an A/V Receiver with High Quality speakers, like Q Acoustics.
