I have been shopping for video cards. I have been interested in ATI's 5830 card, and my question is, how well will that run dolphin? If it makes a big difference, I could spend another $100 and get the 5850 instead. Thoughts?

The 5830 should be fine. Dolphin is more cpu intensive as most emulators.

If you are going this route, I would recommend a gefore 460GTX. It out preforms the 5830. However a 5850 will out preform a 460gtx unless said 460 is overclocked.

It depends on the game and settings. Believe it or not as cpu intensive as dolphin is at a high resolution with a decent efb scale and AA certain games such as wind waker would benefit highly from having the 5850. However most games would not see any improvement. It all depends on what resolution you run at and how much AA you want to use.

In regular pc games yes. But this is dolphin. The 5830 might actually outperform the 460 in dolphin. In fact I bet it will.

Thanks for the comments. Pricing out the 460, it does look very impressive for the price. But, Wind Waker is one of the main games I want to play, and if the 5850 will really help it that much, I may spring for that.

If I'm playing Wind Waker, and we are judging between those three cards, are there going to be significant differences?

I play all my games on a 4850. WW runs for me at max speed with the specs in my sig. You don't need a 5800 series card for that. I see people running on gfx cards that cannot even run aero on w7, but they are good on dolphin. Just proof wii and GC games are very cpu dependent.

Now I'm confused....with my current setup, I can barely run Dolphin. I have a weak video card, but a decent system otherwise. Here are my current specs:

CPU Intel E5200 (dual core, OC to 3.2 ghz)
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS (512 mb memory GDDR2, 64-bit interface)
Memory: 4 gb
Windows 7 x86

Dolphin runs pretty slow right now. It's possible that I need to tweak the settings a bit, but still, it's running slow. Based on what people are saying, it should be running faster on my PC. ???

The worst until now i saw was someone using a 8800GT. A 5770 would be a vast improvement. But if you can afford it id get a 460gtx. Its the best of the mid range dx11 right now. 5850/70 being high end next to the 480.

I would not recommend the hd 5830, its a good card but the performance is to close of hd 5770 which is much cheaper.

I suggest that you go for hd 5850 or gtx 460.

In your place i would do some research on google in "hd 5830 benchmarks", "hd 5850 benchmarks" or "gtx 460 Benchmarks". That will eliminate any doubt you should have concerning those cards, just dont look on 1 review, google for some and decide the best card for you.
