What should I upgrade

I currently have an HP Pavilion Elite e9220f

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 910(2.6GHz)
Cache Per Processor: 2MB L2 Cache
Memory: 8GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 1TB 5400 RPM SATA
Video Card: NVIDIA Geforce GT240 (I replaced the ATI card that came with it)

I'm running dolphin 3.0-95 compiled from source on a Gentoo 64 bit operating system

I cannot get Twilight Princess to run smoothly, as soon as I leave my treehouse and walk into the village I get slowdowns, only 40-70%. Seems to be the same whether I have the resolution at 1080p or the lowest setting. Other games work fairly well, donkey kong country returns runs fast enough, even ssbb runs well enough. Nothing ever runs 100% all of the time though.

With my setup the first things I notice are the slow hard drive speed, a mediocre at best graphics card, not a current gen processor...

What should my first upgrade be? If it should be the processor, my motherboard is a AMD 785G, so I am limited to whatever would work with that (would intel i3,5,7's work?)

yea realized that after i posted. looking on newegg they have this processor that would fit my board, not sure how much of an improvement i would see though. would it be better to just to save up and get a new board & cpu combo?

or would i see bigger benefits from forgetting about the processor and just getting a sick graphics card

Get i5-2500k + compatible(LGA 1155) mobo+good CPU cooler and you're a winner.

Only in hyrule field. Everywhere else should run fullspeed on a 2.8GHz or higher core 2 cpu or a 3.2GHz or higher phenom II cpu.

OP what are your settings (take screenshots of them)? I would highly advise you use windows 7 x64 for dolphin since the openGL backend is significantly slower than d3d9 backend in some games (I'm fairly certain this is one of them and that may be the cause of your slowdown).

i appreciate the advice but that's the only thing i can't do, been using linux for 7 years and i'm not going to go back to windows just to occasionally play an emulator. but i'm open to all other advice.

Move the slider for texture cache accuracy all the way to fast and change your internal resolution to 1x. If that doesn't fix it then you will either need better hardware or to change to windows. We've seen people with severe performance issues on the G210/GT220/GT240 video cards in the past but it was determined to be related to the drivers. Considering linux drivers are completely different I doubt that is an issue. And for the record I agree with RRoD's hardware suggestion.

tried those settings, game speed in the village while on epona was 80-85%. and apparently hyrule field is much worse so i guess i need better hardware.

found this mobo and this cpu. eventually i'll splurge on this ssd and then i still need a better graphics card lol. this gets pretty expensive.

just hoping it'll be powerful enough to run skyward sword in 1080p.

if anyone has any more tips on my config let me know

That's what I expected. If you overclock a little you should be able to attain fullspeed everywhere except hyrule field. 3.4-3.6GHz should be easy to get to.

Why do you need an SSD? Spend that money on a video card instead. And yes both that cpu and motherboard are very good.

And don't forget the power supply upgrade you will probably need. What power supply do you have now?

Yeah, screw the SSD and use that 250$ to get this baby(Also comes with a game you probably can't even play because you're on Linux!):

Make sure your case is big enough, because i have MSI's TFIII GTX 580 and it's HUGE.
