What's the best rev for each of these games?

Hello guys,
These are my specs:
Quote:GeForce GTS 450
4GB RAM DDR2
Athlon II X2 245 2.90GHz
Games I'm looking forward to play:
Quote:
  • SSBB: 40-50 fps with 2 players, 30-40 fps with 4 players
  • DKCR: didn't get past 30fps
  • NSMB: running good with 3.5 release, but having saving issues
  • TLoZ:TP
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • Pokémon Battle Revolution: didn't get past 15fps inside a pokémon battle
  • Tatsunoko vs Capcom: lots of stuttering when the characters use special moves
The last rev I tried was 3.5 release with little success. Lots of stuttering on TvC, for example. I also have heard of a version that ran DKCR very smoothly, but I can't remember what was it.
I'm also using SVN r6505 patched (I like to call it rev-MH3) for both MH3 and Mario Kart Wii

It's quite normal for me to hear people with worse PC configs tell me they can run these games really well. What am I doing wrong?

We don't support old revs and those people have no idea what they are talking about

Your CPU is pretty weak for playing the most recent versions of Dolphin. Generally Dolphin becomes more accurate over time while consequently demanding more from hardware. Your build was fine a few years ago, but things have changed since then. Old revisions are not supported since they have issue that have been fixed in newer revisions. We generally recommend the latest builds, but you may be better off waiting to use the latest builds after a hardware upgrade.

I really don't see any problem in using one different rev for each game, since I build my own front-ends. That means I'm in the wrong forum then?

For clarification, I meant build as in your hardware profile, not a Dolphin revision. Might have been a bit confusing if read the wrong way. Your hardware was good enough for Dolphin at one point, but now the requirements have risen.

Anyway, it doesn't necessarily mean you're in the wrong forum, it just means the old revisions you use aren't supported. If you get problems, then you're on your own. If you have issues with the latest development or stable build (e.g. the NSMB saving issue) we can help you with things like that.

To answer the question posed in the thread title, the latest revisions are often considered the best in terms of overall reliability and compatibility. Speed is a different issue. If you need a balance between speed and compatibility, 3.5 is recommended. 3.0 is years old, so it's not recommended anymore (though nothing is stopping users from using it still). You may find yourself going through many trial and errors for old SVN revisions. If you were to go tha route, look at the Dolphin Wiki for each game you want to play; the pages are littered with testing results from various revisions, old and current. That may be of some help to you.

Last time I checked, the Dolphin Wiki was a bit outdated. Is it still being updated?

It's frequently updated. Dunno the last time you checked. At any rate, if you're going to be using old revisions, you're going to encounter old problems, so even if it is outdated, the info on the page will likely touch upon possible problems you'd get. What's more, the Testing Entries are what you should be looking at if you're looking for the best speed/compatbility ratio. People test the games on various revisions with various hardware, so if you see a similar config doing well on a certain revision, you could try it.

Again, using the latest revision ignores these hassles, but your hardware isn't strong enough to adequately run the most current Dolphin revisions.

Well, info for stuttering in Tatsunoko vs Capcom: this game uses a lot of shaders, and for every new shader that Dolphin doesn't have cached, you'll get some stuttering. It'll will go away only after performing every special move with every character, so Dolphin can create the proper shader cache files... After that, stuttering won't occur anymore (at least in my laptop)...
