What is thermal paste on Ivy bridge processers

I do agree with you here. But given the fact that laptop processors use so low power, and ivy bridge at stock temps doesnt run hotter than sandy bridge. I see no point. Multimedia notebooks aren't made for CPU intensive tasks anyway they're not made to be stressed out.

Also if you're running a quadcore mobile chip (i7) you're only on half the load, 60% load if you use lle on thread. This gives the i7 multimedia notebooks an advantage but you'll still be limited by the poor hd 4000

To be honest, i have never met someone who has RMA'd their laptop because of it running wayyyy too hot. I hear a lot complain about the high temps when they're like in their bed gaming and stuff. But laptops are not made for dolphin, they're made for watching movies/browsing the internet/light tasks whereever you want.
Companies make their laptops based on this strategy. They do test them to this extent that they wont explode while running these tasks. Gaminglaptops aside. Macbook Pro Retina version aside.

A good alternative would be buying a notebook cooler, placing it on your desk. And whenever you feel like gaming go sit on your desk and place it on the cooler. Tho this conflicts the whole point of having a laptop.

Thats would i would do ii mostly just leave it on my desk to game. and if i game without a charger battery dies in like 30 min and its very laggy.

Some notebook coolers for instance cm storm sf-19 will definetly give you a little bit of headroom to the tj max. At least more than thermal paste :p. Also notebook coolers work in such a way that when loading the notebook to its max that it doesnt pass a certain degree.

To sum it up. go game in a fridge if you own a laptop.

You're correct. Laptops still work perfectly even when they overheat so long as they don't reach critical temperatures so people don't RMA them just for that. However it's pretty annoying when it happens and shouldn't just be shrugged off.

Exactly, though if your laptop is on a table and you have a nice ice cold coke next to you, its fine i believe.

Well I already have a gaming computer it runs good but I am just looking for something better.

And what if I put a portable fan with the built in ones will that do anything at all or will it still heat up and might destroy the computer.

And is there any way I can tell when I have to change my themnal paste.

Guys laptops do run "hot" when gaming... especially macs running windows through bootcamp.

However this is because the fans don't work properly as standard using the bootcamp drivers... Its almost as if apple didn't want us to run windows on them, you think? lol

Anyway the problem is kept under control by using a third partly fan control app. eg you can use "lubbo's fan control" on the retina macbook pro to spin the fans constantly at 6000 rpm if you want. That will keep everything under control and stop any cpu throttling.

I really wouldn't go reapplying thermal past on a $3k laptop. Spend £200 quid more on applecare and sleep safe knowing you have 3 years cover. lets be honest after 3 years you'll be ready for a new machine anyway.

Obviously I'm not recommending you go buy a mackbook pro just for gaming, there are far cheaper and better gaming rigs.. However if you already have one of these, and they are fcukign sweet machines, then just make sure you run the above mentioned app.
