What is the anisotropic filter ?

Excuse me if my english is bad but

I was wondering what is the use of the anisotropic filter if I put it to 16x would it makes the game slower or will I gain some percent of speed ?

A very nice demonstration I've read about it, but but didn't completely understand how it really affected the visuals

For me it doesn't seem to cause any difference in speed, it should depend on your graphic card.

yea it makes the far objects not look blurry
