What Controller should I use?

Hi! I've recently been wanting to play PC games with a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard.

So, I'm not sure what is the best option for me. Huh The only controllers I own are 1 GameCube controller and 1 Classic Controller Pro (I also have WiiMotes and Nunchuks of course).

If I'm interested in playing Dolphin as well as PC games, should I get a 1st Party GC adapter, a 3rd Party GC adapter, find a way to use the CCP, or should I just get a PC controller? If you say the third, any suggestions of making it work? If the 4th, any suggestions on a specific PC controller?

Thanks in advance! Big Grin

What you will want is xinput support - almost every PC game in the past 10 years has support for the 360 controller, and it has dinput capability built in to boot. Unfortunately that complicates your options somewhat... I don't believe the mayflash and other adapters have 360 controller emulation (xinput). I'm not sure though, but I know the DolphinBar doesn't have xinput support at all otherwise I'd recommend that for your classic controller pro. And of course you could make them have 360 support with x360ce, but that's complicated. But in theory that would be the cheapest route.

EDIT: Hmm... there is that new option that a user brought up today. It has 360 emulation built in, and it would let you use what you have already... Assuming it works as advertised of course. It might be worth a try? http://julianloehr.de/educational-work/hid-wiimote/

EDIT EDIT: I tried it. It has no xinput emulation. Sad Well, you could use it with x360ce if you really want to though.

The easiest solutions are to get a 360 or Xbox One controller and the drivers for them, or get a DualShock 3 or DualShock 4 and use the SCP drivers. Both options would give you what you want, and have very little fuss!

So I guess it depends on what matters to you? From the design of the controllers to what you want to spend, it's all up to you!

Thank you Major! That answer was so good, I think that deserves a spot in the FAQ.
You've made my choice very clear.

Still... do you think you could help me with just one more question?
If I wanted to use my GC controller for using my PC in general...
Such as mapping important keyboard buttons to GC buttons and mapping the mouse to the c-stick...
What PC USB GC adapter do you think is best?
I've done a little research and it seems Mayflash 4 port one is the best but I just want to ask you.
(the mouse to the c-stick isn't totally necessary but would be nice...)

...that never turns out well. I'm sorry, but that would just give you a pretty bad result. It would be fine for emulators and any PC game that works with Dinput, but for most PC games you would only get a good result if you combined the adapter with x360ce to convert the dinput controls to xinput.

Well I wrote some of the faq, so I guess it would sound faq-ish! Tongue
