Hello everyone, today I finally unveil a project I've been working on since the beginning of the new year. Wario World HD, now available for your viewing and downloading pleasures! I have a trailer prepared showcasing it along with many screenshots below. I remade upwards of 200 textures by hand and swapped out some others for more natural feeling ones. Everything I did not recreate I ran through waifu2x-caffe and increased by 8 times the original size. To see the textures at their best, I highly suggest playing at 8 times the internal Resolution for the full effect! I then went in and did manual touch-ups for all the enemies and many other textures. Over the past few months I was replaying a lot of my childhood favorite GameCube games and using the wonderful HD texture packs that people have created here in this community and Wario World is one of my favorite games so I was bummed no one created a pack for it... So I literally went through the gauntlet of learning about all this stuff just so I could have what I wanted, gotta do things yourself sometimes! Overall I'm happy with how this turned out, I wish I could do something like the Mario Sunshine pack that really makes everything gorgeous but I am one guy and that's where I hope and encourage others to do their own packs or help me with this one if there's something you don't like! A big thank you to the community and Bighead and his texture tool and all the helpful information he's shared that helped me create this pack.

Install Guide

1.) Download from the provided links below.
2.) Extract the folder and rename or keep the name as 'GWW' and place it in the following diectory: Documents/Dolphin Emulator/Load/Textures/(Place within textures)
3.) Configure your settings for maximum enjoyment in the enhancements tab within the 'Graphics' tab of Dolphin and make sure to turn on 'Load Custom Textures' in the Advanced tab within Graphics, turn on Prefetch custom textures as well to stop stuttering. It stores the textures to your RAM, the PNG pack requires you to have 16 GB and the DDS pack requires you have 8 GB.

I have made a regular PNG download and a BC7 DDS download available. The PNG pack has no loss in quality but has more files/a slightly larger download size and can cause stuttering, make sure you select Prefetch Custom Textures in the advanced tab of the Graphics section in Dolphin no matter which pack you are using as it helps with performance so long as you have the required RAM.


Let me know if you find any problems and bugs by replying in this thread or by PM'ing me directly! Changelog is included within the pack as a read me text document.

A million thanks to Bighead as he very kindly created an IPL version of the text boxes you can find here:

One quick thing you should know about Wario World's text boxes, specifically the spriteling messages in game, not the pause menu versions. For some reason even when text is perfectly aligned the letters tend to get cut off at the bottom and have random coloring where the text isn't suppose to have highlights. This is out of my control despite my best efforts, it seems that even though text is perfectly within the canvas size it doesn't wanna play nice, however it isn't that bad at all and is once again only in the in game spriteling text boxes.

Picture below courtesy of Bighead, the text in picture is also the IPL version if you like it's look and would like to use it. Keep in mind the IPL version does not have the end credit text boxes changed. To use them simply place them in the texture pack, anywhere is fine.

this is probably not going to get you a whole lot of improvement and is going to drastically increase the size of your pack. If you have time, you may want to look into something a bit more conservative like 4x. It will probably look about the same as 8x and will be considerably smaller

what IR are your vanilla comparison screen taken at? They look to be way lower resolution than what they're being compared to.

I used the native resolution of the GameCube, in hindsight I should've made it at least 2x so it's easier to see the texture changes more but I'm completely fresh on all this stuff, even my forum post is a little sloppy. I'm planning on rewriting when I upload the update today or tomorrow, this post finally got moved from general but I can't even edit until I assume I get 50 posts. Also yeah I realize maybe I went overboard on the upscale but I was a little stubborn and already did so much work with it at 8x that I just went through with it to the end. But thank you very much for checking it out! This was really for my own selfish needs and to hopefully get more people to play this game, I already got local celeb Bighead to play it lol.

Version 1.1 is now released, it fixes a few UI graphics and adds in HD text! I had some problems with the pause menus text, it was working as intended but I ended up resizing them after making them and now they don't display very clean but not horrendously so. If I feel up to the task to remake them all again I'll do it but for now everything is done.

The pack is like 1.5GB download. It's not going to kill anyone, and frankly, everyone should aim to future proof their mods. Sure, he might not need it, but he did it. And there is nothing wrong with that. Now is there detail to take advantage of that res IDK.

4x IR of Wario World? This fits in the 4K range, which is exactly what he is supposed to be doing for the textures. Not sure the point of these suggestions when most people are aiming for the same type of thing. You might as well just call this a 4K texture pack.

Anyway congrats on the pack. Is this game any good?

You can always downscale it if ya need to. But I prefer the source to be of a higher quality, since that won't be so easy to upscale while also maintaining quality.

As I started this with no knowledge of texture work I used others packs as reference and a few were 8x so I figured Wario World isn't that big of a game with a lot of textures to begin with so I might as well go the distance. As for the game, it's awesome! The gameplay loop is simple yet fun and rewarding, it's a platforming brawler game where you explore levels to find tons of Wario's stolen treasure while beating the hell out of enemies with a bunch of special moves and there's a boss in every level and at the end of every world. Nostalgia glasses off, It's got it's fair share of problems and missed potential but it's not very long, maybe 6 or 7 hours but I highly recommend it.

As I (unambiguously) said: the difference in quality for a 4x upscale vs an 8x upscale is essentially nonexistent for textures generally lacking in detail (you can confirm this yourself with some sample upscales). This is doubly true when discussing waifu2x, which wasn't designed for this type/scale of upscaling (which is why a lot of projects have moved to ESRGAN and other models). They are, of course, free to do whatever they like. I never suggested otherwise.

Can you elaborate and/or show comparisons for this problem? I think I might know what's going on here
