I think YouTube have greatly improved it or something recently. I'm only on a 3Mbps connection and I just watched my F-Zero GX video in 720p via VP9 DASH just fine without any rebuffering at all... in fact it was arguably better than non-DASH because their 720p VP9 DASH format requires less bandwidth than their 720p h.264 non-DASH format; in other words there was actually a larger buffer for me on 720p with DASH enabled than with it disabled (my internet is just barely fast enough for YouTube's non-DASH 720p, to the point that the buffer bar is hardly even visible).
The only thing is that the "Auto" quality setting for DASH leans on the conservative side, so unless I manually set it to 720p it would only play my F-Zero GX video in 480p. However, when I manually set it to 720p right at the beginning it still worked fine.
