VP9/WebM + YouTube = F-Zero GX no longer looks like utter crap

I know exactly why this is. Firefox (and firefox-based browsers) do not currently support DASH playback via HTML5, which also means you're not getting VP9 either since that's available only as a DASH format on YouTube.

This is supposed to be rectified in Firefox 31. Since that's also a new ESR version, that should mean that all Firefox-based browsers should get the functionality with their next full version number.

In the mean time, your browser may actually have partial support for this functionality, but is just disabled. You can re-enable said functionality via the following process:

Fun fact: YouTube's non-DASH 720p h.264 format actually has a higher bitrate than their DASH 720p h.264 format.

I just did some testing and it seems like flash player will not run the video at 60fps even though it runs the same video stream. If you look at "stats for nerds" you'll see that the "dropped frames" amount very quickly goes into the hundreds along with the stage FPS only showing around 30fps. This indicates that it's likely dropping every other frame to make a 60fps video stream be 30fps.

Using Firefox, you'll need to enter fullscreen to view it in 60FPS.

I'm assuming you're referring to HTML5 playback, because fullscreen with flash is still around 30-35 fps (it's not a CPU bottleneck either, I checked).

Think about it in another way: without DASH, there is no way it would be profitable to provide 60FPS 1080p videos on YouTube. Too much bandwidth usage that doesn't actually translate to video views.

I think YouTube have greatly improved it or something recently. I'm only on a 3Mbps connection and I just watched my F-Zero GX video in 720p via VP9 DASH just fine without any rebuffering at all... in fact it was arguably better than non-DASH because their 720p VP9 DASH format requires less bandwidth than their 720p h.264 non-DASH format; in other words there was actually a larger buffer for me on 720p with DASH enabled than with it disabled (my internet is just barely fast enough for YouTube's non-DASH 720p, to the point that the buffer bar is hardly even visible).

The only thing is that the "Auto" quality setting for DASH leans on the conservative side, so unless I manually set it to 720p it would only play my F-Zero GX video in 480p. However, when I manually set it to 720p right at the beginning it still worked fine.

Then why not just download them? The WebM streams in particular are valid matroska files so you can play the streams in any MKV-supporting media player, even while the streams are still downloading or are incomplete. You can even combine the WebM audio and video streams via MKVtoolnix.

(the audio and video streams for h.264/AVC and AAC are not valid MP4 files however and are much less compatible)

At the moment I hate DASH simply because it'll ALWAYS rebuffer the video (at least here), if I go back to a part that I already buffered before it starts rebuffering (and sometimes this drives me mad). But I still prefer 60FPS, 1080p and the cool stuff, so I just use DASH with a "Meh" face....

I'm not even sure if that's possible, but the day they fix these rebuffering issues, I'll instantly fall in love with DASH <3
