Not a single recent game I've looked at the case of that exists on steam can be done without steam. the only example I own that doesn't is World of Goo, but as that's DRM free it doesn't care for any code based validation. And by the way, when I bought a disk copy of Skyrim, it installed it, and then overwrote most of the 4.7GB install with over 6GB of updates. That level of disk copy being useless makes me almost consider a digital download, but I like the case, and I can't get a discount on a digital download off Amazon, or because most braches of GAME are closing down (which isn't a bad thing: their 2nd hand games cost more than Amazon's new stuff).
