Another update with my progress. It looks like I will need a computer to act as a VPN "server" since the host of the VPN cannot use the BBA due to all VPN clients being disconnected when bridging your LAN connection with the TAP device. I also found out that Windows 7 only allows one VPN client to be connected at any given time, so I may need to find some workaround solution. I did manage to find a guide for setting up an OpenVPN server on Windows, but it looks very complicated. I'll attempt it sooner or later, but for now I'm just going to host a VPN on my computer, have one of my friends connect to it and bridge their LAN, then use a separate computer on my LAN to test the BBA connection.
You bring up a good point. It is entirely possible that KAR LAN play wouldn't work under the conditions of (relatively speaking) high latency. But I don't think anyone really knows exactly how much latency it can handle, so I'm going to keep trying until I can at least get the BBA to recognize the other "Gamecube" and initialize the LAN connection. If it doesn't work out, I'll continue to use Netplay.
It doesn't look like this would be a solution to my problem, but I will look into it and get back to you about it.

A true LAN would have potentially < 1 ms latency, but your Internet connection won't be anywhere close to that good. If KAR requires perfect synchronisation over the network, then it'll never work properly over the Internet. Netplay might be more reliable in that case, since it's designed with higher latency in mind.

This may look like advertising, and I'll be honest when I say I don't know jack about networking, but Evolve mentions having a Virtual Private Network function.

I'm monitoring this thread. You haven't declined my offer to play with you, and I'm dying to play some KAR without Split Screen, let alone without setting all my friends to Level 9!
